Debbie Roma
Behind by two lengths at the eighth pole, Strapping Groom and Irad Ortiz Jr. win the Tom Fool by a length over Dads Caps.

Strapping Groom, the winner of the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga in 2013, suffered a broken bone behind his right knee and will not race again, but he could have a career as a stallion, trainer David Jacobson said Sunday.

Trainer Dominguez serving 60-day suspension

Trainer Henry Dominguez is serving a 60-day suspension for a TCO2, or total carbon dioxide, overage, he said Friday. Dominguez began his suspension Nov. 22, and it runs through Jan. 20. A call to both the New Mexico Racing Commission and the Zia Park stewards was not returned by press time Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and an afternoon when there was no racing at Zia.

Discreet Marq scores in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks in August 2013.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The biggest win of Discreet Marq’s career came here at Del Mar in the summer of 2013 in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, so it only made sense that after a campaign in New York and Kentucky this year, she was sent west again for her final start of 2014 in the Grade 1, $300,000 Matriarch Stakes on Sunday.

Sunday marks the final day of this successful, and brief, 15-day fall meeting at Del Mar. The Matriarch drew a field of eight, though trainer Mark Casse said his intention was to run Lexie Lou on Saturday in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby.
