Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Taris wins the Wide Country Stakes at Laurel by 5 1/2 lengths in January.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Taris, purchased for $2.35 million in November, will be sidelined until the second half of 2015 after injuring an ankle during a second-place finish Friday in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita.

On Saturday, trainer Simon Callaghan said the injury was diagnosed in the hours after the La Brea, adding Taris will undergo surgery Monday to stabilize her right front ankle. Callaghan described the injury as a non-displaced condylar fracture that will require the insertion of screws to repair the break.

Three Hearts aims to beat familiar foes again in Frankel Stakes

Benoit & Associates
Three Hearts, under Joe Talamo, wins the Grade 3 Red Carpet by a half-length Nov. 22 at 29-1.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The Red Carpet Handicap last month at Del Mar was such a good race that they’re running it again Saturday at Santa Anita, with six horses from that race, including the top five finishers, meeting in the Grade 3, $100,000 Robert J. Frankel Stakes for older female grass runners.

Three Hearts scored a 29-1 upset in the Red Carpet – formerly known as the Beverly Hills when it was run at Hollywood Park – but even though half of this 12-horse field is the same, there are numerous factors that could produce a different outcome.

The broken right wrist jockey Trevor McCarthy incurred after being thrown from his mount following the second race Saturday at Laurel Park will not require surgery, and he could be back riding in about eight weeks, according to his agent, Scott Silver.

“It was a clean break and didn’t need any surgery,” Silver said. “The break was about an inch above the knuckle you have on your wrist towards the elbow.”

McCarthy’s wrist was placed in a cast. He will see a specialist in eight or nine days and have it X-rayed again, Silver said.

Tax break for owners approved for 2014

U.S. legislators have approved a tax break allowing racehorse owners to continue to use a three-year depreciation schedule, a retroactive provision that was being pushed by racing lobbyists.

The provision, which will apply to the 2014 tax year, was one of hundreds of special-interest tax breaks contained in a bill protecting benefits that expired at the end of 2013. The bill extends the tax breaks for one year. Any longer extension would have likely resulted in a veto by President Barack Obama.
