DRF's Livingston wins record third Eclipse

Barbara D. Livingston, the chief photographer for Daily Racing Form since 2008, has been named the recipient of the 2014 Eclipse Award for photography, the organizers of the awards announced Tuesday.

Also named as Eclipse Award winners Tuesday were freelance writer John Scheinman for feature/commentary writing and Joe Clancy, the editor of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, in the news category.

Handle soars at Turfway Park's holiday meet

Turfway Park's holiday meet handle jumped more than 20 percent compared to 2013.

Bucking a national trend of declining betting figures, Turfway Park showed a dramatic increase in handle for its recently concluded holiday meet, which ran during the month of December.

Turfway, located in northern Kentucky, saw its handle spike more than 21 percent despite racing two fewer race cards than in 2013, according to statistics supplied by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. Average daily handle climbed even higher, 36 percent.

Total handle last month at Turfway was $31,135,521, up from $25,637,320 for the previous December. Average handle was $1,945,970.

Finley formally contests N.Y. horsemen's group election

Terry Finley, the founder of West Point Thoroughbreds, has filed an official complaint with the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association contesting the results of a recent election for NYTHA president, alleging that the association did not properly follow election protocols and failed to identify its voting members.

Ramon Preciado enjoys breakthrough year

It has been a long climb for Ramon Preciado, who in 2014 won his first training title by sending out 118 winners at Parx Racing.

Preciado had been knocking on the door at Parx for many years, finishing in the top five in the trainers’ standings annually since 2009. In 2013, Patricia Farro beat him by six winners, 86-80. This year, Preciado returned the favor, defeating Farro by five.

Asmussen kept off 2015 Hall of Fame ballot

At age 47, Steve Asmussen is the second-winningest trainer of all time.

Steve Asmussen, the second-winningest trainer of all time and the trainer of horses who won three consecutive titles as Horse of the Year, again will not be on the final ballot for this year’s Hall of Fame pending investigations by racing authorities in Kentucky and New York, the Hall of Fame announced Tuesday.

NBC Sports has been named the winner of two Eclipse Awards, for the network’s live coverage of the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic and for a feature piece on California Chrome that ran just prior to a live broadcast of the Belmont Stakes, organizers of the awards announced Monday.

Trainer Ronnie Warren Jr. dead at 79

Ronnie Warren Jr., who retired from training in 2007 after a colorful career, died Dec. 31 in Little Rock, Ark., after suffering an aneurysm, according to a family friend. He was 79.

Warren was perhaps best known as the trainer of Coax Me Chad, the runner-up to Swale in the 1984 Kentucky Derby. He also was the leading trainer at the 1968 Keeneland fall meet with a then-record 16 winners. He told Daily Racing Form for a 2013 article that he had “four different horses win three races each” at that three-week meet. “Of course, that was in a different age.”

Rams owner plans NFL stadium at Hollywood Park site

The old home of Hollywood Park racetrack might be the new home of an NFL team as early as 2016.

Stan Kroenke, the owner of the St. Louis Rams, and Stockbridge  Capital Group, which owns the 238-acre site of the former racetrack, have reached an agreement to build an NFL stadium, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times on Monday.

Super high five returns $94,786, tops carryover payouts

ARCADIA, Calif. - The $1 super high five produced the largest payoff of three jackpot bets that began with carryovers on Sunday’s nine-race program at Santa Anita.

There were carryovers in the 50-cent pick five ($392,388), $2 pick six ($87,742),  and $1 super high five ($41,273) from Saturday. Sunday’s payoffs were $710 in the pick five, $15,659 in the pick six, and $94,786 in the super high five.

There were 3,102 winning tickets in the pick five, covering the first five races. Bettors added a massive $2,105,110 to the pool on Sunday.

Del Mar studies possibility of opening stables year-round

Del Mar and the landlord of its property, the California 22nd District Agricultural Association, have launched a feasibility study on year-round stabling at the popular seaside racetrack.

Track president Joe Harper said on Sunday that the study will focus on the costs of year-round stabling, and how stabling will affect other events held on the property through the year.
