OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Dubai Sky, the winner of the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park on March 21, fractured a cannon bone in a hind leg while galloping Saturday morning at Churchill Downs and is off the Triple Crown trail, trainer Bill Mott said Saturday.

Mott said Dubai Sky underwent surgery Saturday and will miss the remainder of his 3-year-old season.

“He’s out for the rest of the year,” Mott said at Aqueduct, where he was to run Tiz Shea D in the $1 million Wood Memorial. “Dr. Larry Bramlage did surgery already. He’s in recovery.”

Wagering on U.S. races down 12 percent in March

Wagering on U.S. races in March was down 12 percent compared with the same month last year, as the number of races held at U.S. tracks plummeted nearly 15 percent, according to figures released by Equibase on Saturday.

Wagering fell from $963.2 million in March 2014 to $847.7 million this March, according to the figures. Because the number of races held during the month declined at an even steeper rate, average wagering per race actually rose 3.2 percent on a month-to-month basis, from $288,629 last March to $297,947 this March.

Keeneland cancels last four races Friday

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The last four races on the opening-day card of the Keeneland spring meet were canceled Friday after a second round of heavy rain pounded this track amid a tornado watch and lightning strikes.

The first six of 10 races were run without incident, albeit over a track left sloppy by four inches of rain that hit the track overnight and into Friday morning.

Track officials said they have no record of cancellations of any races in the track’s 78-year history, nor could any longtime media members recall so much as one canceled race here.
