Loveberry moving tack to Churchill, Indiana Grand

Jareth Loveberry will move his tack to Kentucky and Indiana for the summer following the recently completed meet at Oaklawn Park.

Loveberry, 27, said he will be based at Churchill Downs and Indiana Grand through August, with his first scheduled Kentucky mount coming Thursday at Keeneland. Monty Penney will have his book.

After 35 races in which horses could earn points toward a berth in the Kentucky Derby on May 2, the prospective field is largely set, though the final composition of the maximum 20-horse field could undergo a few tweaks over the next 2 1/2 weeks, since there are a handful of horses currently in the body of the race whose status is cloudy.

Luzzi receives George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockey Mike Luzzi was a gracious recipient of the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award at Santa Anita on Sunday, taking the opportunity to state he is anxious to return from a lengthy absence caused by injury.

Luzzi has not ridden since November, when he broke a leg and fractured his pelvis in an accident in the paddock at Aqueduct.

“This is the best day I’ve ever had when I’m not riding,” he said during a brief winner’s circle ceremony. “It was a shock to win the award.”

Lexie Lou named 2014 Canadian Horse of the Year

The 3-year-old Canadian-bred filly Lexie Lou gets tested for class in the Grade 2 Canadian.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Queen’s Plate and Woodbine Oaks winner Lexie Lou capped off her successful 2014 campaign with championships in three different divisions at the 40th annual Sovereign Awards on Friday night at Woodbine.

Lexie Lou received the majority of the votes to be named Canadian Horse of the Year over male sprint champion Calgary Cat and fellow female turf horse finalist Deceptive Vision, and she also captured the 3-year-old filly and female turf horse championships.

Creditors seek $230M from stable founder Moreno

A U.S. trustee for the creditors of a bankrupt company owned by Mike Moreno, the founder of Southern Equine Stables, has said in a petition he is seeking $230 million from Moreno and his affiliated companies, claiming Moreno breached his fiduciary duties to the company to the detriment of its creditors.

William J. Morey Jr., trained Dixie Dot Com and Bold Chieftain, dies at 74

Longtime Northern California trainer William J. Morey Jr. died Friday morning at a rehabilitation facility in Los Altos. Calif., after a long battle with cancer.

Morey, 74, trained millionaires Dixie Dot Com and Bold Chieftain. He was elected to the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Hall of Fame in 2014.

Morey received his trainer’s license in 1970 and scored his first victory that year with Crimson Flag at Pleasanton. He saddled 1,347 winners during his career. His runners earned $22,415,416.

OZONE PARK, NY - Apprentice jockey Angel Cruz escaped injury after being involved in a spill during the running of Aqueduct's eighth race Thursday and hopes to ride Friday at Aqueduct.

He most certainly will be back by Saturday when he is scheduled to ride Bridget's Big Luvy in the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.
