Diversy Harbor will undergo surgery for sesamoid injuries

Diversy Harbor will undergo surgery after she was pulled up with sesamoid injuries in the $151,000 Santa Barbara Handicap at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Diversy Harbor was transported to the Alamo Pintado Equine Clinic in Los Olivos, Calif., on Sunday morning, a day after she was pulled up with sesamoid injuries in the $151,000 Santa Barbara Handicap at Santa Anita.

Diversy Harbor, the 5-2 favorite, was racing at the rear of the field in the turf race at 1 1/4 miles before jockey Gary Stevens abandoned the race on the final turn. Diversy Harbor spent the night at trainer Tom Proctor’s stable before going to the clinic, a little more than a two-hour drive from Santa Anita.

Shared Belief appears sound after pulling up in Charles Town Classic

Shared Belief, pulled up by jockey Mike Smith in the early stages of Saturday’s Grade 2 Charles Town Classic, may have an issue in his right hind end but otherwise appeared sound, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Sunday morning.

Hollendorfer said Shared Belief would be going to a clinic near Charles Town for a nuclear scan to determine the extent of any physical issues.

Golden Gate: Pablo Flores fractures thumb

Jockey Pablo Flores sustained a small fracture in the tip of his left thumb when unseated by Monsajem Accrete prior to the first race Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

Leading rider Russell Baze replaced Flores as Monsajem Accrete finished fifth in the two-furlong heat that was the first race for 2-year-olds this season at Golden Gate Fields.

Shared Belief stumbles, pulled up, vanned off in Charles Town Classic

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Shared Belief sustained  a stifle injury during the Charles Town Classic on Saturday and was pulled up six furlongs into the 1 1/8-mile race by jockey Mike Smith. He was then vanned back to his stall in the equine ambulance.

Shared Belief stumbled at the start of the Classic and dropped far back in the nine-horse field. After failing to respond to Smith's urging, Shared Belief was pulled up on the second turn of the three-turn race.

One Lucky Dane, second last time out in the Santa Anita Derby, was taken off the Kentucky Derby trail after suffering a condylar fracture to his left front ankle in a workout here at Santa Anita.

California hotwalker won't stand trial for murder

A hotwalker who in December was charged with murder was judged in late March by a Los Angeles-area court mentally incompetent to stand trial, according to a California Horse Racing Board investigator.

Gary Steven Nance, 42, has been transferred from jail to a state hospital that houses mentally ill prisoners for evaluation. Nance was arrested last December in downtown Los Angeles by the California Highway Patrol on murder charges, an investigator said. Details of the case were not immediately available.

Collmus, Scheinman to receive Old Hilltop Award

Racecaller Larry Collmus and turf writer John Scheinman have been selected to receive the Old Hilltop Award, which recognizes excellence in covering Thoroughbred racing, according to the administrator of the award, Pimlico Race Course.

Collmus, a native of Baltimore, and Scheinman, who got his college degree in Washington, D.C., will be presented the awards during the May 14 Alibi Breakfast, an event held every year at Pimlico on the Thursday prior to the Preakness Stakes.

Mubtaahij begins long journey to Kentucky Derby

Mubtaahij and jockey Christophe Soumillon win the UAE Derby by eight lengths Saturday.

Thursday morning might have marked one of the most international moments in Kentucky Derby history.

Trainer Mike de Kock was reached by phone at home in South Africa, the good 3-year-old he trains, Mubtaahij, having left Dubai earlier in the day en route – and it is a circuitous route – to Louisville.

“I think he’s somewhere over Iraq about now,” de Kock speculated, having just watched another talented 3-year-old he trains, Tannaaf, run well in a rich stakes at Newmarket in England.

Meet kicks off with high hopes, higher purses

AUBURN, Wash. – Emerald Downs kicks off its 20th season Saturday with a 10-race card and high hopes for its first meeting under the ownership of the Muckleshoot Indian tribe.

The tribe, proprietor of the largest casino in Washington, added Emerald to its portfolio over the winter, quickly raised overnight purses by 20 percent, and installed Phil Ziegler, a veteran marketing director with an extensive background in racing and casino management, as track president.
