Hazel Park opens 40-day meet Friday

The 2015 meet at Hazel Park Raceway brings with it a sense of stability not seen in Michigan’s Thoroughbred industry for quite some time.

The northwest Detroit-area track switched its focus from harness racing last year to become the state’s primary Thoroughbred venue, ending a 30-year hiatus for flat racing on the grounds. Hazel Park is Michigan’s fourth home for Thoroughbred racing since 2007 and was the only track left standing after Mount Pleasant Meadows shut down last winter and Northville Downs abandoned plans to convert from Standardbreds in the middle of 2014.

Almost down to the felt, McLaughlin roars back with Frosted

Barbara D. Livingston
Frosted's 2-length win in the Wood Memorial earned him a spot in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – As a poker player, Kiaran McLaughlin appreciates the feeling of having a strong hand. As a horse trainer – with the goal of winning a Kentucky Derby – McLaughlin knows it’s better to have more than one ace in the hole. A pair is better, three of kind even more so, and so on.

McLaughlin, the horse trainer, entered 2015 with a full house of Derby prospects. But a flop here, a bad turn there, and well, McLaughlin was close to having to fold.

Yes, that outline obviously applies to American Pharoah and Dortmund, the Bob Baffert-trained duo that has dominated the talk of this year’s Derby.
