California Chrome probably out of Prince of Wales's Stakes

California Chrome could be as high as 10-1 in overseas wagering when he runs in the Prince of Wales's Stakes on Wednesday.

California Chrome, the 2014 Horse of the Year, is likely to be scratched from Wednesday’s Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot because of an abscess in his right front foot, trainer Art Sherman said from England on Monday.

A dejected Sherman said that California Chrome did not train on Monday and that the abscess was detected in tests. Sherman said he believes that California Chrome bruised a foot while training at Newmarket, England, in recent days.

“He’s pretty sore on it,” Sherman said

Danzig Moon euthanized after fracturing leg in Plate Trial

ETOBICOKE, Ontario—Danzig Moon, the fifth-place finisher in this year’s Kentucky Derby, sustained  a fatal injury while favored in Sunday’s Plate Trial Stakes at Woodbine.

Racing over a wet Polytrack, Danzig Moon tracked the leading Midnight Trace until midway on the backstretch, where jockey Julien Leparoux pulled him up with a fractured right hind leg.

“It was a compound fracture,” said Ontario Racing Commission veterinarian Greg Taylor. “The horse was humanely euthanized.”

Bruce Levine wins 2,000th career race

Trainer Bruce Levine recorded his 2,000th career victory on Saturday night when Guayana won a $29,500 allowance race at Penn National by two lengths.

Earlier in the day, Levine recorded his 1,999th career victory at Belmont Park when Praetereo won a $50,000 claimer by a half-length.

“It means a lot, especially being based in New York,” Levine said. “It’s not like you’re at a smaller track racking up a lot of wins. To win that many races, it’s tough, it’s hard - a lot of work, a lot of years.”

Belterra: Ouzts takes sole possession of 11th place on all-time list

After three straight days of drawing blanks, Perry Ouzts wasted no more time in his quest to gain sole possession of 11th place on the all-time list of winningest jockeys in North America.

Ouzts, who will turn 61 next month, scored with his first mount Saturday in the first race at Belterra Park in Cincinnati. He brought home Cobra’s Crown by 1 1/2 lengths to earn his 6,471st victory during his 42-year career.

Ouzts moved past his cousin, the retired Hall of Fame rider Earlie Fires.

Waldrop to testify for tax-law changes

American Pharoah to parade for the public on Saturday night

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah will parade before the Grade 3 Regret Stakes on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has said he wants to share American Pharoah with “the people,” and he’ll be doing just that with 30,000-plus of his closest friends Saturday night at Churchill Downs.

In his first appearance since he became the first horse in 37 years to sweep the Triple Crown, American Pharoah will spend about 45 minutes in front of his adoring public when on parade between races during the Downs After Dark program at Churchill.

Hazel Park cuts purses 15 percent

Hazel Park Raceway announced a 15 percent purse reduction until further notice on Tuesday in the overnight for Friday’s races.

The decision between track management and the Michigan Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association came in response to declining purse fund revenue from simulcast wagering.

“It’s just an attempt to extend the meet with the purse money that’s available,” said Gary Tinkle, executive director of the Michigan HBPA. “We’re funded by the simulcast purse revenue, and that’s running at an 11 percent decrease this year.”
