Parx Racing has carded two competitive handicaps for Pennsylvania-breds on Saturday, the Crowd Pleaser and the Power By Far.
The Crowd Pleaser, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds, is carded as race 6. The Power By Far, a five-furlong turf sprint for fillies and mares, is race 8. Both races have $75,000 purses.
The Crowd Pleaser has a field of nine that includes an Augustin Stable entry in Street Fashion, trained by Jonathan Sheppard, and Cat Humor, trained by Graham Motion.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind. – Jockeys Oriana Rossi and Alejandro L. Contreras were transported to Major Hospital in Shelbyville following a spill in the fifth race at Indiana Grand on Wednesday.
Contreras's mount, Divine Thunder, was up close between rivals when he clipped heels with the leader and went to the ground. Rossi, trailing the field, could not avoid the fallen horse, and her mount, Top Priority, then went over Divine Thunder.
PHOENIX – Turf Paradise will bring up the curtain for a 60th time as the track announced dates and its stakes schedule for the 2015-16 stand. The Phoenix track will hold its 136-day meet Saturday, Oct. 17, through Sunday, May 8.
As with the most recent meet, live racing will be conducted primarily Saturdays through Wednesdays, though there will be a few weeks (Breeders’ Cup week, Kentucky Derby week) when the schedule will change.
Hazel Park Raceway will end its meet Saturday, Aug. 8, instead of Sept. 12, as originally scheduled, due to insufficient funds, per a Michigan Gaming Control Board release.
The Detroit-area racetrack was approved to host 40 live dates in 2015 and will fulfill 30 under the new schedule. The track’s marquee Michigan Sire Stakes card will be moved to the new closing day after initially being slated for Sept. 12. Simulcast operations will continue as scheduled.
DEL MAR, Calif. – In his 32-race career, Big John B has thrived on turf and failed on dirt.
A 6-year-old gelding, Big John B has won 12 races, all on turf, including the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap last summer, and earned $507,175 overall. He has earned $3,985 in four starts on dirt and synthetic tracks.
The record has not discouraged trainer Phil D’Amato from entering Big John B in the $100,000 Cougar II Handicap at 1 1/2 miles on dirt at Del Mar on Friday. There is no doubt that the distance is a good fit. The challenge will be the surface.
The nine-race West Virginia Breeders’ Classics card at Charles Town on Oct. 10 will be comprised entirely of stakes and offer a total of $1.08 million in purses.
The $500,000 West Virginia Breeders’ Classic, the richest statebred race in the United States, will top the card. The Classic is a 1 1/8-mile race.
The second-richest stakes on the card is the $150,000 West Virginia Cavada Breeders’ Classic. The Cavada is a seven-furlong race for West Virginia-bred fillies and mares.
There will be seven other stakes on the card with purses ranging from $50,000 to $70,000.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Moment Is Right likely will be favored as the only stakes winner among the eight 2-year-old fillies in the $150,000 Schuylerville on Friday’s opening-day card at Saratoga. But trainer Wesley Ward cautions not to discount the other filly he has in the Grade 3 dash, Banree, despite her disappointing performance last out while making her stakes debut seven weeks ago in the Tremont.
By most established handicapping criteria, Toh’s Grey Cat seems like a standout in the fourth race Friday at Gulfstream Park, a $36,000 starter allowance with a $50,000 claiming option going a mile on the main track that serves as the nominal feature. He is in top form, having run first or second in five straight races at Gulfstream; he has run Beyer Speed Figures of between 82 and 86 over that stretch, higher than the career-best figures of his six rivals; and he has won 10 races, which matches the combined total of his opponents.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Breeders’ Cup and Maker’s Mark will team up to sell a limited-edition run of the bourbon maker’s bottles to raise $1 million for charity, the two companies announced Wednesday at Keeneland, the site of this year’s Breeders’ Cup event.
