Tom Keyser
Antonio Gallardo ranks second among all jockeys in North America in wins this year.

It’s no surprise two-time Eclipse Award winner Javier Castellano leads all jockeys in North America in wins this year, but how many racing fans could readily name the guy who ranks second? The jockey in question is Antonio Gallardo, who has dominated the standings at Tampa Bay Downs and Presque Isle Downs over the past two years, winning a pair of riding titles at both.

Framework in place for one-year offtrack stabling agreement

Offtrack stabling in Southern California will remain at Galway Downs, Los Alamitos, and San Luis Rey Downs in 2016 after officials with area racetracks and horsemen’s organizations reached “a framework” for a one-year agreement to maintain stabling at those venues, according to Chuck Winner, chairman of the California Horse Racing Board.

On Saturday, Winner said he had been party to discussions in recent days and that Los Alamitos would remain part of offtrack stabling on the circuit.

“I think we’ve reached a resolution,” said Winner.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager opens with new option

Susie Raisher
Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Nyquist will stand at Darley's Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Ky., upon his retirement.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The first of four pools in the 2016 Kentucky Derby Future Wager opens Thursday with something of a twist – for the first time, a separate wager involving the sires of Derby runners also will be available.

The new Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager is modeled after the future wager offered annually by Churchill Downs since 1999. It requires bettors to pick the sire of the Derby winner from a list of 23 stallions, although the morning line for this novelty wager suggests the 24th or “all others” wagering option could be a heavy favorite.
