The treasurer of the horsemen’s group based at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, Pa., has gone missing and is under investigation for accounting fraud, the horsemen’s group confirmed on Monday.
Matthew Carter, an employee of the Pennsylvania Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association since 2010, went missing in February after HBPA officials uncovered “accounting irregularities” with the organization’s funds, according to a statement. Pennsylvania HBPA officials contacted on Monday declined to comment, citing an investigation by state police.
ARCADIA, Calif. -- Ziconic, the second foal out of the great racemare Zenyatta, is entered in Friday's fourth race at Santa Anita, which would be the second start of his career and his first around two turns.
Ziconic was a closing third in his debut on Feb. 20 in a seven-furlong race against maidens. He stretches out to 1 1/16 miles on Friday. He drew post 2 in a field of seven.
Mike Smith, the regular rider for Zenyatta during most of her career, takes over on Ziconic, who was ridden by Gary Stevens in his debut.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Longtime Woodbine owner and trainer John Calhoun died Monday after a lengthy illness at the Georgetown Hospital, west of Toronto. He was 94.
Calhoun’s career spanned seven decades, and he trained approximately 500 winners from 1955 to 2013. In 1986, he sent out his homebred Jammed Prince to capture the Autumn Stakes under his son-in-law, Jorge Pizarro. Grandson Tyler Pizarro won his first race on Calhoun’s Dancer’s Flyer in 2006.
Sheer Drama, who won the Grade 1 Personal Ensign, Grade 1 Delaware Handicap, and Grade 2 Royal Delta last year, was named the Florida-bred Horse of the Year for 2015 at the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association annual awards banquet Monday night in Ocala, Fla.
