Parx equine herpes quarantine lifted

A horse is led from the makeshift quarantine barn built over a basketball court on the Parx backstretch. An equine herpesvirus quarantine had been in place at the track since April 1.

The equine herpesvirus quarantine at Parx Racing was lifted by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture on Tuesday after all of the horses in a quarantined barn and an ontrack isolation area tested negative for the disease. The quarantine had been in place since April 1.

Preakness: Probable off track no worry for O'Neill

Gene Stevens, Post Time USA publisher, dead at 81

Gene Stevens, the publisher of the Florida-based Post Time USA for nearly four decades, died on May 13 at his home in Miami, according to accounts from friends. Stevens, who had diabetes, was 81.

Born in Brooklyn, Stevens founded Post Time USA in 1973 with several partners. The publication, which was shuttered in 2010, typically contained several stories and columns on horse racing topics and sometimes hundreds of color photographs of personalities from the racing, show business, and political spheres.

BALTIMORE – Nyquist, the Kentucky Derby winner, spent Monday morning at Pimlico getting acquainted with the paddock and the starting gate. His trainer, Doug O’Neill, past performances in hand, will spend the next few days getting acquainted with the new competition that awaits Nyquist in Saturday’s $1.5 million Preakness Stakes.

Trainer Broberg's wife lost at sea

The wife of leading trainer Karl Broberg was declared lost at sea Monday after she apparently fell from one of the top decks of a cruise ship early Friday morning, according to news reports.

Samantha Broberg, 33, was declared missing Friday afternoon from a Carnival cruise ship en route from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel, Mexico. The cruise-ship company later said that video cameras recorded Broberg falling from the 10th deck of the ship after she sat on a railing and fell backward at approximately 2 a.m. Friday.

The latest news cycle involving Romans came when he and several passengers were injured in a frightening automobile accident in the Churchill Downs neighborhood just a few hours after the Kentucky Derby on May 7.
