Creator noses out Destin to win the Belmont
ELMONT, N.Y. – The 2016 Belmont Park meet has belonged to Jose Ortiz. Belmont Stakes Day belonged to his brother Irad.
Irad Ortiz Jr., 23, won his first American classic on Saturday, giving Creator a flawless ride to win the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes. Ortiz rallied Creator from 10th position to nip Destin by a nose in the final stride. A day later, Ortiz was still living in the moment.
“Great feeling, great race,” Ortiz said Sunday morning after working a horse on turf for his main client, Chad Brown. “I’m feeling so blessed right now, it’s amazing.”
The 4-year-old debut of Runhappy has been further delayed. The champion sprinter of 2015 was diagnosed last week with bone bruising of the right front cannon bone and will be kept out of training for about 60 days while remaining stabled at the Thoroughbred Center training facility in Lexington, Ky., trainer Laura Wohlers said Monday.
ELMONT, N.Y. – The rain came too late for Exaggerator.
A proven commodity in the slop, Exaggerator was less than his best over a fast track in Saturday’s $1.5 million Belmont Stakes, fading to 11th in the 13-horse field, 14 lengths behind the winner, Creator. He was the 7-5 favorite.
Thus, Exaggerator’s Triple Crown odyssey ended with a thud. After a strong second to Nyquist in the Kentucky Derby and a dominant win in the Preakness, Exaggerator was a nonfactor in the Belmont.
We took a look at both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, with an eye toward how some of the contenders matched up to similar runners in the recent history of those races. Let’s do the same here with the Belmont Stakes, but we’ll issue the same warning as in those articles.
A tweak in pick six rules at Del Mar will lower consolation payoffs while increasing 6-of-6 payoffs and carryover amounts when the summer meet begins July 15.
In an effort to revive waning interest in the pick six, Del Mar will restructure payoff percentages to an 85-15 split of the net pool – 85 percent to perfect tickets or carryover, 15 percent to consolation payoffs. The traditional split in Southern California is 70-30.
Belmont Park
Weather: Clear
Track: Fast
Temp.: 56
ELMONT, N.Y. – The weather was unseasonably cool, with the temperature in the mid-50s, when the racetrack opened for training at Belmont Park on Thursday, with the 13 prospective Belmont Stakes starters pretty much in maintenance mode just over 48 hours in advance of the race.
ELMONT, N.Y. – One day after surrendering his license for failing a drug test, trainer Brian Lynch took responsibility for his actions, offered apologies to his owners and staff, and vowed that it will never happen again.
Earlier this week, Lynch failed a drug test administered by the New York State Gaming Commission. Lynch admitted to having smoked a “vapor stick” that contained THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, a chemical associated with marijuana. Lynch said he is not a regular user of marijuana.
ELMONT, N.Y. – Above the desk in trainer Chad Brown’s Belmont Park office is a picture of Bobby Frankel, the late Hall of Fame trainer under whom Brown worked for several years.
During that period in the early 2000s, Brown got to work with some of the top horses in training, many owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms. Last fall, eight years after going out on his own – and six years after Frankel’s death – Brown was afforded the opportunity to train for Juddmonte.
ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Brian Lynch is ineligible to participate in New York racing for an indefinite period, according to the New York State Gaming Commission.
A source confirmed that Lynch surrendered his trainer’s license to the gaming commission Wednesday morning at Belmont Park.
Lynch did not return phone calls seeking comment. Drew Mollica, his attorney, declined to comment.
Since Lynch is now unlicensed, his horse, Private Zone, will have to scratch from Friday’s Grade 2, $250,000 True North Stakes, a race for which he was the morning-line favorite.
