Parx Racing will increase the purse for the Pennsylvania Derby to $1.5 million if the winners of all three 2016 Triple Crown events start in the Sept. 24 race, the track announced Tuesday.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - There will not be a matchup between Tepin and Lady Eli in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa here on Aug. 27.
Tepin, the reigning female turf champion, will not run at Saratoga this summer and instead will make her next start in the Grade 1, $1 million Woodbine Mile on Sept. 17, trainer Mark Casse said.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The popular Woodbine owner Joe Stritzl died from natural causes at his home in King City, Ontario, last Saturday at age 83.
Stritzl campaigned stakes winners Spin the King and Dawson’s Legacy, who was Canada’s champion 2-year-old male in 1997, the year he finished second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Dawson’s Legacy won the Grade 3 Sky Classic and the Grade 3 Play the King in 1999.
Chris Griffin, who is calling races on the Northern California fair circuit, has been named the caller for the two-month fall meet that starts Oct. 5 at Gulfstream Park West in north Miami, Fla.
For the last five years, Griffin had served as the master of ceremonies, public address announcer and play-by-play announcer for the Harlem Globetrotters.
Zoomin Effortlessly has been disqualified from his win in the Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Invitational after the Quarter Horse tested over the threshold level for stanozolol, a steroid. Moonin The Eagle has been elevated to first place in the race, which rewarded its winner with a berth in the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos.
The Remington Park Invitational was run on June 4.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame added 10 members during the 2016 induction ceremony at the Mississauga Convention Centre on Wednesday night.
The Thoroughbred-racing inductees are Wise Dan, Dahlia, Mark Casse, Michael Colterjohn, and Daryl Wells Sr.
Wise Dan was North America’s Horse of the Year, champion older male, and champion turf male in 2012 and 2013. Among his 23 victories were back-to-back wins in both the Breeders’ Cup Mile and Woodbine Mile for owner Morton Fink and trainer Charlie LoPresti.
The Pennsylvania racing commission has upheld a ruling that revoked the license of jockey Pierre Hernandez-Ortega for the possession of an electrical device found last year during a search of the jockeys’ room at Parx Racing near Philadelphia.
