Race-caller Mirahmadi released from hospital

Announcer Frank Mirahmadi will call opening day at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Monmouth Park race-caller Frank Mirahmadi was released from the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune City, N.J., on Monday, a week after undergoing colon surgery.

Mirahmadi, 48, will continue his recovery at his New Jersey residence. It has not been determined when Mirahmadi will return to the Monmouth announcer's booth, but he is eager to do so.

Suddenbreakingnews finally to be gelded

Suddenbreakingnews, an outside closer, should benefit from the way the track plays at Mountaineer in the West Virginia Derby.

Suddenbreakingnews, the winner of the Grade 3, $500,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn and a fast-closing fifth in this year’s Kentucky Derby, was scheduled to be gelded Tuesday, according to trainer Donnie Von Hemel.

Suddenbreakingnews has two undescended testicles and was to have both removed at a clinic in Lexington, Ky. He likely will be out a few months, Von Hemel said Monday. Suddenbreakingnews last raced on Aug. 6, finishing fifth in the Grade 2 West Virginia Derby. Before that, he was ninth in the Belmont Stakes at 5-1.

Firing Line's comeback postponed, trainer says

DEL MAR, Calif. - Firing Line’s comeback race, originally scheduled for Wednesday at Del Mar, will be postponed, trainer Simon Callaghan said Sunday morning.

“We can’t run Firing Line,” a disappointed Callaghan said after the 2015 Kentucky Derby runner-up returned from a 6 a.m. gallop. “He didn’t travel as good this morning. He seemed a bit quiet, as if he’s looking after himself.”

Saratoga-Del Mar pick four pays $29.95

DEL MAR, Calif.- The 50-cent Saratoga-Del Mar all-stakes pick four returned $22.95 on a bet in which two races were won by the champions Songbird and California Chrome.

The pick four combined two Grade 1 races from Saratoga and two graded stakes from Del Mar on Saturday afternoon.

The winners were Tourist ($7.40) in the Fourstardave Stakes, Songbird ($2.40) in the Alabama Stakes, Ashleyluvssugar ($7) in the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap, and California Chrome ($4.20) in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic. Tourist was the second choice, while the other runners were favored.

Larry and Sharon Ross among those elected to Washington Racing Hall of Fame

Trainers Larry and Sharon Ross head the list of people and horses who were elected to the Washington Racing Hall of Fame.

Jockey Jack Leonard and breeder Robert L. Edwards were also voted into the Hall of Fame by representatives of the Washington Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association, Emerald Downs, and media.

An induction ceremony will be held at Emerald Downs on Washington Cup Day, Aug. 28, with inductees to be honored in the winner’s circle between races.

Pick four links Saturday stakes from Saratoga, Del Mar

DEL MAR, Calif. – Del Mar and Saratoga will offer a 50-cent pick four linking two top stakes from each track Saturday.

The Del Mar-Saratoga all-stakes pick four will include two Grade 1 races from Saratoga – the Fourstardave Handicap on turf and the Alabama Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on dirt – as well as the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap on turf and the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on dirt.

The four races drew fields of 9, 7, 12, and 9. Plans for the bet were finalized Wednesday and Thursday after regulatory bodies in California and New York approved terms.

The graded-stakes-winning millionaire Za Approval has been retired from racing, and the 8-year-old Ghostzapper gelding will now reside at owner-breeder Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Stud in Ocala, Fla.
