Monarchos, who turned in the second-fastest winning Kentucky Derby performance in the classic's history, died Saturday morning after undergoing emergency surgery to repair an intestinal rupture the day before. The Maria’s Mon horse, who most recently stood at Nuckols Farm, was 18.

Thistledown plans to race Friday, Saturday as valets return to work

Thistledown racetrack in North Randall, Ohio, is expecting to hold its last two 2016 live racing dates Friday and Saturday without the disruption that led to the cancellation of races on Wednesday, the track’s spokeswoman said Friday morning.

Shannon Mortland said, “We are going to race as scheduled,” on Friday and Saturday, but she declined to comment on whether the track had resolved a pay issue with its valets. The valets, who assist riders with their tack, refused to work the Wednesday card approximately 10 minutes prior to the post, leading to the cancellation of the card.

Frosted to run in Breeders' Cup Classic

Frosted, training at Greentree on Wednesday, is a prospect for the Dirt Mile and the Classic.

The suspense is over. Frosted, a multiple Grade 1 stakes winner, will make his next start in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Nov. 5, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Thursday.

“All systems go to the Classic,” McLaughlin said by phone from Saratoga.

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf has attracted a full gate of starters eight times during its nine-year history, and the lone exception, 2013, had a 13-horse field. The race nearly always attracts more interested parties than can start, and it probably will again this year when it is run Nov. 4 at Santa Anita, but Breeders’ Cup officials even at this late date are wondering just who will fill in the margins.

Handle declines at Delaware Park meet

All-sources handle at the Delaware Park meet, which concluded Saturday, was down 10.3 percent from the 2015 season, according to figures released by the track Wednesday.

Delaware Park handled $93.9 million for an average of $1.16 million per day during its 81-day season, which began in mid-May. In 2015, Delaware handled $104.79 million during the same number of race days.

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is hoping Point Piper will encounter the same racing conditions in the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita as he did in August in the Grade 3 Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs. Point Piper won that two-turn race in a track-record time of 1:32.90.

Former Fort Erie announcer Wells dies at 56

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Former Fort Erie Race Track announcer Daryl Wells Jr. died Thursday at age 56.

Wells fell ill after working at Ajax Downs, east of Toronto, last Monday. He ended up in an Ajax hospital, where he died surrounded by family and friends.
