Derby Watch: Classic Empire remains on top

Barbara D. Livingston
Classic Empire opens as the 5-1 favorite on Derby Watch despite his third-place finish in the Holy Bull.

From the time the horses crossed the wire in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile until the Holy Bull was run on Feb. 4, Classic Empire, last year’s champion 2-year-old male, was the acknowledged favorite for the Kentucky Derby on May 6. But his third-place finish in the Holy Bull has left the Derby scene as muddy and roiling as the Ohio River after a springtime storm, with the likes of Irish War Cry and McCraken ascending in the standings.

Churchill Downs to host Arlington's Matron, Chicago Handicap this year

Barbara D. Livingston
This year, Churchill Downs will host a pair of stakes formerly run at Arlington Park - the Matron and the Chicago Handicap.

Two stakes that were previously run at Arlington Park outside of Chicago will be run instead at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., this year, according to a stakes schedule for Churchill’s spring meet that was released Monday by the parent company of both tracks, Churchill Downs Inc.

The two stakes, the Matron and the Chicago Handicap, were cut by Arlington this year in an effort to push more purse money into the track’s overnight races. The $100,000 Matron, which has been run for 79 years, will be run at Churchill on May 20, while the $100,000 Chicago will be run June 24.

Three-time champion Royal Delta dies at 9

Barbara D. Livingston
Champion Royal Delta, two-time winner of the Breeders' Cup Distaff, has been retired from racing.

The star-crossed breeding career of three-time Eclipse Award winner Royal Delta came to a tragic end this week, when the mare died due to foaling complications in Ireland. Her Galileo filly survived.

This was the first foal for Royal Delta, 9, who was retired in November 2013. She was exported to Ireland, where she was boarded at Coolmore, which stands the globally prominent sire Galileo. She did not get in foal to that stallion in 2014; the following year, she aborted the foal. She was bred in 2016, resulting in this filly.
