DRF Data Services introduces API to allow horseplayers real-time data access

Daily Racing Form has launched DRF Data Services, which aggregates all high-level data offered by DRF, including new access to a real-time application program interface for upcoming races. Horseplayers can now create database queries or write programs based on chart data, as well as Beyer Speed Figures from DRF and TimeformUS speed and pace figures.

Jay Cronley, racing writer and author, dead at 73

Jay Cronley, the writer whose book “Good Vibes” was turned into one of the most iconic racing films of all time, the comedy “Let It Ride,” died on Sunday night of a heart attack at his home in Tulsa, Okla., according to reports. Cronley was 73.

Elliott to receive Woolf Memorial Jockey Award

Jockey Stewart Elliott has more than 4,700 wins in his career.

Stewart Elliott, who won the 2004 Kentucky Derby aboard the popular colt Smarty Jones, has been named the recipient of the 2017 Santa Anita George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.

The award is voted on by riders nationwide and reflects career achievement and personal character. Elliott, 51, is riding at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting. He is scheduled to receive the trophy in a ceremony at Santa Anita in late March.

The award was first presented in 1950 and honors the late jockey who died as a result of injuries suffered in a spill at Santa Anita in 1946.

Epicharis to run in UAE Derby

Epicharis, who won the Hyacinth Stakes last Sunday in Tokyo to move to the top of the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby points list, has accepted an invitation to the United Arab Emirates Derby on March 25 at Meydan, the Japan Racing Association said on Thursday.

This is a significant step for Epicharis, for it puts him on the same schedule now as Lani, who won the UAE Derby last year before coming to the United States for the Kentucky Derby, in which he finished ninth. Lani subsequently was third in the Belmont Stakes.

Longtime trainer Penney dies at 82

Jim Penney, one of the all-time leading trainers in Washington, died Wednesday at his home in Edgewood, Wash. Penney, 82, was part of the Washington Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in 2003.

He won the Longacres Mile a record five times. His last win in the Mile was with Flamethrowintexan in 2006. His other Mile winners were Sabertooth, Edneator, Theologist, and Silver Mallet.

Trainer Farro serving 15-day suspension

Patricia Farro, one of the leading trainers in Pennsylvania for the past five years, began serving a 15-day suspension on Feb. 15 after one of her horses tested positive for clenbuterol, according to Pennsylvania racing commission records.

Farro did not appeal the penalty and will be suspended until March 1, the records show. The clenbuterol positive was detected in a post-race sample from Billy Lion Heart, who finished first in a $20,000 claiming race on Jan. 14 at Parx racetrack near Philadelphia. Billy Lion Heart was disqualified. Farro was also fined $500.
