Fantasy Owners Day includes surprise yearlong contest for cash

As part of Fantasy Owners Day at Laurel Park on Saturday, the close to 300 registrants were matched up for the afternoon with a horse in one of the six overnight races on the card. The fantasy owners will get to spend time with the horse's connections and visit the paddock and winner's circle.

But at the morning seminar, Sal Sinatra, president of the Maryland Jockey Club, made a surprise announcement that Fantasy Owners Day would not just be a one-day affair and will instead last for all of 2017.

Single-ticket jackpot carryover of $274,301 in pick six

ARCADIA, Calif. -- The pick-six single-ticket jackpot carryover swelled to $274,301.16 following Thursday's races at Santa Anita after five tickets isolated all six winners, those tickets each receiving $17,695.20.

There were 148 tickets with five wins, those worth $128.40 apiece.

There was $255,341 in the single-ticket jackpot entering Thursday's card, and that likely fueled a better-than-average Thursday handle of $165,616 in fresh money.

The single-ticket jackpot has not been hit for 12 racing days, since Feb. 20.

Mastery back at barn after surgery on leg

Mastery, with Saturday's CashCall Futurity win, is now 3 for 3 in his career.

The top 3-year-old colt Mastery, who suffered a condylar fracture to his left front leg on Saturday at Santa Anita, underwent surgery on Monday afternoon at Santa Anita that "went very well," his trainer, Bob Baffert, said early Monday evening.

Mastery returned to his stall in Baffert's barn at Santa Anita following the surgery.

Mulholland, owner of Grade 1 winner Malibu Mint, dies at 74

John R. Mulholland, the co-founder of Mulholland Springs Farm in Lexington, Ky., and the owner of runners including Grade 1 winner Malibu Mint, died Thursday. He was 74.

A native of Sharon, Mass., Mulholland served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and his interest in horses eventually led him to Oklahoma, where he began training western pleasure horses.

Santa Anita: Pick six jackpot carryover of $134,808 for Saturday

ARCADIA, Calif. – The pick six paid $4,313 at Santa Anita on Friday to multiple ticketholders, leaving a carryover of $134,808 in the single-ticket jackpot pool for Saturday’s 11-race program.

The single-ticket provision of the pick six has not been hit in nine racing days since Feb. 20. The single-ticket portion of the pool is paid out only if there is a single winning ticket in the pick six.

Friday’s pick six began with a carryover of $124,640 from Thursday. Bettors added $88,821 to the pick-six pool on Friday.

No intentional wrongdoing found in case of swapped horse identities

Louisiana racing investigators have concluded that a trainer whose horses raced under swapped identities in multiple starts in the state in December and January did not intend to run the horses under false identities, the top official of the state racing commission said on Thursday.
