Trainer suspended, owners fined for alleged ownership fraud

ELMONT, N.Y. – The New York stewards suspended trainer Brandon Charlerie for 60 days and fined him and two other owners $3,000 each for fraud as it related to the claim and ownership of the horse Palladian Bridge.

Charlerie has appealed the penalties and will be permitted to train under a stay.

According to a ruling issued by the New York State Gaming Commission, Charlerie “committed an improper, corrupt and fraud act and committed and attempted to commit fraud and misrepresentation” as it related to racing Palladian Bridge.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On any given morning, Tom Bohannan can be spotted on the Churchill Downs backstretch, quietly going about the business of moving horses from point A to point B for Brook Ledge Horse Transportation.

A quarter-century ago, the racetrack chores were quite different for Bohannan. That’s when he was ascending – if ever so briefly – to the top of his profession as a Thoroughbred trainer.

“It was a pretty exciting time,” recalled Bohannan, now white-haired at age 61.

Preakness Doings: Classic Empire returns to track

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Classic Empire, who figures as the second wagering choice in the 142nd Preakness on May 20 at Pimlico, went to the track for the first time since the Kentucky Derby and jogged as dawn was breaking Wednesday at Churchill Downs.

“He was awesome this morning,” Norman Casse, son and assistant of trainer Mark Casse, said as Classic Empire was cooling out.

Preakness Doings: An energetic Always Dreaming arrives at Pimlico

Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming will be featured in the Preakness at Pimlico on May 20.

ELMONT, N.Y. - While his Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming was en route to Baltimore Tuesday morning, trainer Todd Pletcher was at his home base of Belmont Park, overseeing the training of about 40 head of horses, many of whom he hasn’t seen in a while.

“The hardest thing so far is getting caught up on everything else,” said Pletcher, who also has horses in Saratoga and south Florida. “You’re always playing catch-up after the Derby whether you win or not, certainly after you win more so.”

Offolter wins 1,000th race of career

Trainer Joe Offolter won his 1,000th Thoroughbred race in North America on Monday, when Heademoffatthepass romped by 4 1/4 lengths in the third race at Will Rogers Downs.

Quincy Hamilton was aboard Heademoffatthepass ($11.40) in the maiden special weight sprint for fillies and mares. Offolter trains the 3-year-old daughter of Caleb’s Posse for the partnership of Don Von Hemel, Bill Sparks and Joe Alexander.

Owner Shah, trainer O'Neill part ways

Prominent owner Kaleem Shah and trainer Doug O’Neill have parted ways, a little more than four months after some of Shah’s horses were transferred to O’Neill from Bob Baffert.

O’Neill said in a text message on Monday that he was “very appreciative of the time I’ve had with Kaleem, his family, and his horses.” O’Neill did not elaborate on the reason he and Shah are no longer working together.

Nine likely to take on Always Dreaming in Preakness

Led by Always Dreaming, the Kentucky Derby winner, five horses from the Derby and five newcomers to the Triple Crown trail make up the prospective field for the Preakness Stakes on May 20 at Pimlico.

Always Dreaming, who has won four races in a row, will try to become the second Triple Crown winner in three years but only the second since 1978. As of Monday, a field of 10 was shaping up for the Preakness, with four of the 19 horses who futilely gave chase to Always Dreaming on Saturday at Churchill Downs back to try again.
