Ohio Derby probable next start for Girvin

Barbara D. Livingston
Girvin, who has been fighting foot problems, trains Wednesday at Churchill Downs under Rosie Napravnik.

Girvin, the Louisiana Derby winner who finished 13th in the Kentucky Derby, most likely will make his next start in the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby on June 24 at Thistledown, trainer Joe Sharp said Thursday.

Sharp said he is leaning toward running Girvin in the Ohio Derby at 1 1/8 miles over the Grade 3, $100,000 Matt Winn, run at 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs on June 17. In addition to being worth more money, the Ohio Derby gives the horse an extra week from the Kentucky Derby.

Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico opens on Friday for a full weekend of trials for two of its major stakes for Quarter Horses. The 52-date season will run through Sept. 4. Belmont Doings: Classic Empire, Japanese invader Epicharis likely to run

Mathea Kelley/Dubai Racing Club
Epicharis (right), second in the UAE Derby to Thunder Snow, is pointing to the June 10 Belmont Stakes.

There will be no Triple Crown bid in the Belmont Stakes, and it’s likely that the race won’t have the Kentucky Derby or Preakness winner. But what it will have is the unluckiest horse in this year’s Triple Crown, Classic Empire, as well as international intrigue with the Japanese invader Epicharis, as part of a card whose Breeders’ Cup-style quality will serve Belmont Park well this year without the marquee attraction of having a Triple Crown on the line.

No day off for busy Brown following Preakness win

Barbara D. Livingston
Chad brown was back at his Belmont Park barn the day after Cloud Computing won the Preakness.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Chad Brown did not rest on his laurels following Cloud Computing’s upset victory in Saturday’s 142 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. In fact, there was little rest at all for Brown, who drove back from Baltimore late Saturday night, arriving on Long Island about 1:30 a.m.

There was plenty of work to be done Sunday morning at Belmont Park, what with Grade 1 stars such as Lady Eli, Connect, Time Test, and Sea Calisi needing breezes for upcoming stakes engagements.

Settlement creates two winners of 2016 Parx Oaks

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer John Servis has reached a settlement with Pennsylvania regulators.

There wasn’t a dead heat, but the 2016 Parx Oaks will have two winners.

In a highly unusual settlement between trainer John Servis and Pennsylvania regulators, both Miss Inclusive, who was first across the wire, and Eighth Wonder, the second-place finisher, will be listed as the winners of the May 7 Parx Oaks last year at Parx Racing. Miss Inclusive, however, will not receive a share of the purse because Miss Inclusive, trained by Servis, tested positive for clenbuterol, a regulated medication.

Tres Abbott to assist in training of Conquest Mo Money

Barbara D. Livingston
Conquest Mo Money, with trainer Miguel Hernandez at Pimlico, was supplemented to the Preakness and Belmont Stakes at a cost of $150,000.

BALTIMORE - Owner Tom McKenna is sending Conquest Mo Money, who finished seventh in Saturday's Preakness, to the Fair Hill barn of trainer Tres Abbott for the summer.

Conquest Mo Money, who had previously finished second in both the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and Grade 3 Sunland Derby, has been trained throughout his career by Miguel Hernandez, McKenna's private trainer.

Hernandez was based at Sunland Park during the winter and has about 25 horses for McKenna at Prairie Meadows, outside Des Moines, Iowa.

Pletcher gracious in defeat as Always Dreaming disappoints

Debra A. Roma
Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming faded to eighth in the Preakness after setting the early pace.

BALTIMORE – Just a few years ago, the disappointment would have been far more profound. But with American Pharoah having ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought with his sweep two years ago, perhaps it was a bit easier for racing fans and the connections of vanquished Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming to accept defeat Saturday in the 142nd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.

Jamarjo much the best in National Hunt Cup

Jamarjo, runner-up in the Grade 1 Lonesome Glory at Belmont Park last season and a winner over the local course a year ago, regained his good form to dominate Saturday’s Grade 3, $50,000 National Hunt Cup, the feature at the 87th Radnor Hunt Races in Malvern, Pa.

A 10-year-old Irish-bred son of Marju trained by Leslie Young and owned by Irv Naylor, Jamarjo was ridden by Graham Watters, a replacement for injured jockey Paddy Young.
