Arrogate, Songbird in Pacific Classic make great intrigue

Barbara D. Livingston
Songbird has raced the Delaware Handicap distance of 1 1/4 miles only once before, when she won the Grade 1 Alabama.
DEL MAR, Calif. – The potential field for the biggest race of the Del Mar meet, the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 19, is ripe with intrigue, as Arrogate is still intended for the race, and the filly Songbird has been nominated. It would mark Songbird’s first start against males should she compete.

Both also are being considered for races at Saratoga, and there is the possibility that one will run here and the other at Saratoga.

Benoit & Associates
Owner Kosta Hronis (left) and trainer John Sadler celebrate with jockey Santiago Gonzalez after Hard Aces won the Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar last July.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The same care and nurturing that Kosta Hronis utilizes growing grapes and citrus in central California was practiced by trainer John Sadler when Hronis got into racing seven years ago. Both are bearing bumper crops.

Saratoga jockey race tough to handicap

Barbara D. Livingston
Jose Ortiz (above) enters the final three days of the Aqueduct inner-track meet with an 85-79 lead in the jockey standings over his brother Irad.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – For 31 summers, from 1976 through 2006, only seven individuals wore the crown as Saratoga’s leading jockey. Over the last 10 years, seven different riders have won the Saratoga riding title.

The winners of the last three Saratoga riding titles – Jose Ortiz, Irad Ortiz Jr., and Javier Castellano – are the leading candidates to win the title at this year’s meet, which begins Friday. But at least one jockey’s agent thinks it could be even more wide open than that.
