Phil Serpe sent out his 1,000th winner as a trainer Thursday at Aqueduct when he won the ninth race with Wingman under jockey Junior Alvarado.
The win was the second in two days at Aqueduct for Serpe and owners Chester and Mary Broman. Serpe won the fifth race Wednesday for the Bromans with Land Mine.
Serpe, 58, has been training since 1984. A native of Montclair, N.J., he worked with saddle horses as a youngster and went to work as a groom at the Meadowlands in 1976.
Breeders’ Cup has put off issuing payments in the live-money handicapping tournament it held last week in conjunction with its two-day event as it performs an internal investigation of the strategies used by several of the players who earned prize money, the organization confirmed Thursday.

The main track featured a dead rail both days. The on-air commentators made no mention of the bias until just before the final race, the Classic, was run. DEL MAR, Calif. - Lady Eli, who suffered significant cuts to her hind legs during Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar, has been withdrawn from Tuesday’s Keeneland November sale, it was announced Sunday.
Lady Eli got stepped on during the early stages of the Filly and Mare Turf, a race in which she finished seventh behind Wuheida. Lady Eli lost a left hind shoe and suffered lacerations to both hind legs.
Bill White, president of the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, has resigned, citing a move to central Florida in his resignation letter, according to officials of the group.
White submitted the resignation letter this week, saying he was stepping down immediately as a director. As a result, the FHBPA’s first vice president, Stephen Screnci, will become the organization’s president, and Joan Needell, an alternate on the board representing owners, will step into a voting role on the board, according to Glenn Berman, executive director of the FHBPA.
DEL MAR, Calif. – On the morning of Oct. 27, Cherie DeVaux, atop her stable pony, accompanied Lady Eli and exercise rider Walter Melasquez to the training track at Belmont Park. After standing by the quarter pole gap for several moments, DeVaux jogged alongside Lady Eli before turning her and Melasquez loose for one last gallop.
Lady Eli would have a workout the following day on Belmont Park’s turf course and then fly to Southern California for what is likely the final race of her career.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Churchill Downs announced plans Tuesday for a $32 million project to improve the parking and transportation for the Kentucky Derby and other major racing events held at the track. Designs call for an enlarged bus depot and improved transportation infrastructure to ease the congestion that typically arises for the Kentucky Derby, when annually more than 170,000 fans attend the races.

Saturday, Servis will step into the Breeders’ Cup spotlight for the third time when he sends out Firenze Fire in the $2 million Juvenile at Del Mar. Firenze Fire is coming off a victory in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 7. He has trained extremely well since, giving the impression that he could be a threat to the heavily favored Bolt d’Oro in the Juvenile.
