Memorial service for jockey Flores at Parx on Tuesday

Jockey Jose Flores died Thursday afternoon as a result of injuries sustained in a fall at Parx on Monday.

The time and location of services for the late jockey Jose Luis Flores have been changed.

Visitation will now be Tuesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Eastern on the third floor of the Parx Racing grandstand. Visitation will be followed by a memorial service.

The visitation and service were originally scheduled to be held at the Tomlinson Funeral Home in Bensalem, Pa., but the turnout is expected to be larger than that facility can accommodate.

Flores, 57, died on Thursday of injuries he suffered in a racing accident at Parx on Monday.

Trainer Evans fined, suspended 30 days for medication overage

Sunland Park leading trainer Justin Evans has been suspended 30 days for a Class 4 medication violation dating back to the Zia Park meet in November, according to a recent ruling issued by the New Mexico Racing Commission. He also was fined $2,500.

Evans was cited for an overage of dexamethasone, an approved therapeutic medication, in a sample taken from Dapirate following his win in the eighth race Nov. 26 at Zia. A split sample was sent to a second testing lab and confirmed the overage, according to the ruling.

Evans did not immediately return a call Saturday.

Racing resumes at Parx after death of jockey Flores

Jockey Jose Flores died Thursday afternoon as a result of injuries sustained in a fall at Parx on Monday.

Racing will resume at Parx at 12:55 p.m. Eastern on Saturday for the first time since Monday, when jockey Jose Luis Flores was fatally injured.

The Parx racing community has been in mourning for Flores since he went down in the ninth race Monday. Parx canceled its Tuesday card, and today is its next regularly scheduled race day.

The first race Saturday will undeniably be an emotional time for Parx jockeys, horsemen, employees, and fans.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Peter Miller has been suspended seven days, fined $2,500, and placed on probation through October 2019 – when his current license expires – for what Santa Anita stewards in a ruling issued Sunday said was because of “derogatory words about a licensee’s unborn baby” in an incident last September at the San Luis Rey Downs training center, where Miller was based at the time.

Breeders' Cup board declines to split up event

The Breeders’ Cup board at a meeting on Thursday in Lexington, Ky., passed over a proposal to split its event into cards held in November and December, the organization said in a statement.

According to the statement, the board “decided not to proceed” with the concept, which would have shifted the Classic, Juvenile, Juvenile Fillies, and Sprint to a card on the second Saturday in December.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Avery Island, a Kentucky Derby prospect owned by the Godolphin Stable, was to be sent to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. on Tuesday for evaluation after having returned from his most recent workout at the Palm Meadows training center lame, according to trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

Avery Island launched his 3-year-old campaign with an impressive victory in the Grade 3 Withers at Aqueduct on Feb. 3 and was scheduled to make his next start March 24 in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds.

Former jockey Nemeti dies at 69

Bill Nemeti, a former jockey who worked in the racing office at New York Racing Association tracks for two decades, died March 7. He was 69.

As a jockey, Nemeti won 656 races from 1976-83, including 29 stakes, according to Equibase. His biggest victory came aboard Princelet in the Grade 2 Meadowlands Cup in 1981. His other graded stakes victories came in the 1980 Long Branch on No Bend, the 1982 Salvatore Mile on Count His Fleet, and the 1982 Lamplighter on Majesty’s Prince.
