Santa Anita returning to normal post times

ARCADIA, Calif. – Santa Anita post times return to normal starting Thursday, when the track resumes a uniform first-post schedule of 12:30 p.m. every racing day including Sundays. The exceptions are Triple Crown days; first post at Santa Anita on Kentucky Derby day is noon.

Belmont Stakes new goal for Gronkowski

The English-based colt Gronkowski, who was declared out of the Kentucky Derby on Monday with an infection, is expected to return to training next week and point to the Belmont Stakes, according to a press release from the colt’s owner, Phoenix Thoroughbreds.

Gronkowski earned a berth in the Kentucky Derby by winning the Burradon Stakes at Newcastle on March 30, clinching the top spot on the European Road to the Kentucky Derby. But he contracted the infection and had to be treated with antibiotics, preventing him from shipping to Kentucky for the Derby.

Quip to skip Kentucky Derby, point to Preakness

Quip, who won the Tampa Bay Derby and most recently was second in the Arkansas Derby, will bypass the Kentucky Derby on May 5 at Churchill Downs and instead be pointed to the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, on May 19 at Pimlico, Elliott Walden, the chief executive officer of co-owner WinStar Farm, said Monday.

“We’re not going to run him,” Walden said from the 2-year-olds in training sale in Ocala, Fla. “We wanted a little more time with him.”

Infection costs Gronkowski spot in Kentucky Derby

Gronkowski’s trip to the Kentucky Derby has been spiked.

According to a press release put out by his majority owner, Phoenix Thoroughbreds, Gronkowski has a slight infection and will miss the May 5 Kentucky Derby. Combined with news on Monday that Arkansas Derby runner-up Quip will bypass the Derby, that allows both Combatant and Instilled Regard into the Derby field.

The press release said Gronkowski spiked a fever over the weekend and had to be treated with antibiotics, preventing him from traveling from England to Churchill Downs for the Derby.

Sydney Cooper, Ontario horseman, dies at 97

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Longtime Ontario horse owner and philanthropist Sydney Cooper passed away Saturday at age 97 in Toronto.

Under R.M.C. Stable, Cooper campaigned John the Magician, who won the 1997 Breeders’ Stakes, the anchor leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Cooper also raced the 1999 Breeders’ runner-up, John the Drummer; Ascot Yael, who was victorious in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly in 1999; and 2012 Ontario Lassie Stakes winner Aunt Els.

West Point Thoroughbreds has purchased an interest in multiple graded stakes winner My Boy Jack, chasing the Kentucky Derby in partnership for the second straight year.

The move adds another ownership group to the program for My Boy Jack in a season in which partnerships have been the norm for Derby hopefuls. My Boy Jack will race for Sol Kumin’s Monomoy Stables, Kirk Godby and Matt Bryan’s Don’t Tell My Wife Stables, and West Point Thoroughbreds. Jockey Kent Desormeaux will wear the Monomoy silks aboard the colt trained by his brother, Keith.

Monomoy Girl set for final drive to Kentucky Oaks

Monomoy Girl is likely to be a short price in Saturday's Ashland Stakes.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Monomoy Girl, one of the top two contenders for the May 4 Kentucky Oaks, was scheduled to breeze Saturday at Churchill Downs in her first work since she won the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland.

Trainer Brad Cox said Friday he has been very happy with how Monomoy Girl bounced out of her 5 1/2-length romp under Florent Geroux in the April 7 Ashland and that he will have the filly breeze twice leading into the 144th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Oaks at Churchill.

Sovereign Awards: Pink Lloyd named Horse of the Year

Pink Lloyd drew the rail for his 2018 debut in Saturday's Jacques Cartier Stakes.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Pink Lloyd, who won eight consecutive stakes starts last season at Woodbine, earned three Sovereign Awards and was named 2017 Canadian Horse of the Year at the 43rd annual Sovereign Awards ceremony at Palais Royale in Toronto on Thursday.

Pink Lloyd was named Canadian Horse of the Year over Ami’s Mesa and Holy Helena, and was also named champion male sprinter and champion older male.

“Pink Lloyd has given me the biggest thrill of my life,” trainer Robert Tiller said.

In a development that will bring far more attention to an already compelling Kentucky Derby, and likely make a decided longshot a far shorter price, Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots announced in a press release on Wednesday that he is now part of the ownership group of the colt named for him.

According to the press release, Gronkowski the football player “has acquired a substantial stake” in the racehorse Gronkowski, who earned his berth in the May 5 Kentucky Derby by topping the inaugural European Road to the Kentucky Derby series.

Don Ryan named chief executive at DRF

Don Ryan, a digital publishing and online gaming executive who previously worked at Betfair U.S. and Parx Racing and Casino, was named chief executive officer of the parent company of Daily Racing Form, according to an announcement made by the company Wednesday.

Ryan, 49, will replace John Hartig, who has been chief executive of the parent company, Sports Information Group, since 2008. Hartig is joining the company’s board of directors. Ryan was hired by Z Capital Group, a private investment company that purchased SIG in 2017.
