Grade 3 winner Cosmonaut joins Old Friends in New York

Cosmonaut, a multiple Grade 3 winner, has been relocated to Old Friends at Cabin Creek in Greenfield Center, N.Y. The 16-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid had been pensioned from stud duty after standing the 2016 breeding season at Keane Stud in Amenia, N.Y.

Ohio-bred millionaire Catlaunch put down at 17

Catlaunch, one of four Ohio-breds with more than $1 million in earnings, was euthanized due to a chronic neurological disease. Old Friends Equine Retirement in Georgetown, Ky., made the announcement Friday.

The 17-year-old Noble Cat gelding raced as a homebred for Ron Fields’s Scioto Farm. He began his career with trainer Luis “Albert” Palacios but moved to assistant Ivan Vazquez late in his 3-year-old season after Palacios died in a car accident.

Grade 2 winner Tour of the Cat dies at 20

Tour of the Cat had been in residence at one of Old Friends' locations since 2009.

Old Friends Equine Retirement announced the death of Grade 2 winner Tour of the Cat on Friday after the 20-year-old gelding suffered a diaphragmatic hernia with an entrapped intestine at the operation’s Kentucky Downs facility in Franklin.

Bred in Florida by C.V.S. Sales Co., Tour of the Cat finished fourth in the Tampa Bay Derby and second in the Grade 3 Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah Park as a 3-year-old. Later that season, the son of Tour d’Or won the Rizzi Stakes and The Vid Stakes at Calder Race Course and finished second in the Grade 3 Calder Derby.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – While the Kentucky Derby was nearly a week ago, the focus is still squarely on the Bluegrass State as runners prepare for the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes on May 19 at Pimlico in Baltimore. The majority of the prospective field, led by Kentucky Derby winner Justify, is currently based at either Churchill Downs or Keeneland.

Winx tops Longines Racehorse Rankings

Winx has ascended to the top of the latest Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings with a rating of 130, eclipsing retired Gun Runner, who is locked in at 129.

The latest rankings, assembled by an international racing officials panel under the auspices of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, saw Winx’s mark boosted from 129 on the strength of a 3 3/4-lengths victory over Gailo Chop in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the remarkable mare’s 25th consecutive victory.

New England kingpin Charles Assimakopoulos dies at 83

Charles Assimakopoulos, an owner, trainer, and breeder whose Yasou Stable Trust was a dominant presence on the New England racing scene for decades, died April 22 in Fitchburg, Mass., following a long illness. He was 83.

As an owner, Assimakopoulos racked up 12 meet titles at Suffolk Downs in Massachusetts, and four at Rockingham Park in New Hampshire. He was also perennially among the top trainers at both tracks.

Preakness Stakes: Justify set to return to training

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Justify was scheduled to return to training Thursday at Churchill Downs as his connections continue to make assurances that the Kentucky Derby winner will not be hampered by the minor foot bruise he incurred in the race Saturday.

Jimmy Barnes, the Bob Baffert assistant who is overseeing Justify at Churchill, said Wednesday the colt was closely examined the previous day by veterinary staff from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and was cleared to resume training.

Quip to get his shot at Preakness

Quip has been confirmed to run in the May 19 Preakness, officials at Pimlico announced Tuesday afternoon.

Elliott Walden, president of WinStar Farm, one of Quip’s owners, had reserved judgment on whether to run Quip in the Preakness since Justify won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs. WinStar also is a co-owner of Justify.

Justify 'fine,' Baffert says of minor leg irritation

Justify, the Kentucky Derby winner, jogged fine at the barn on Monday morning at Churchill Downs, one day after his reaction to walking over gravel in the stable area with some minor irritation on his left hind leg caused social media to go into a tizzy.

"He's so much better today," trainer Bob Baffert said Monday via telephone from Santa Anita while watching his horses train. “Believe me, half those horses who ran on that track had something. It’s from running in the mud. It's like diaper rash.
