Royal Delta tops Hall of Fame nominees

Royal Delta won consecutive runnings of the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic, in 2011 and 2012.

Led by multiple Eclipse Award winner Royal Delta, appearing on the ballot in her first year of eligibility, and Rags to Riches, one of only three fillies to win the Belmont Stakes, a total of nine individuals – five horses, three trainers, and one jockey – were announced on Thursday as the finalists who will appear this year’s ballot for the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Ness, Gargan back training for Midwest Thoroughbreds

Jamie Ness helped put Midwest Thoroughbreds on the map. He has saddled 1,577 winners for Midwest.

Jamie Ness in the Mid-Atlantic and Danny Gargan in New York are training horses again for Richard and Karen Papiese’s Midwest Thoroughbreds Inc.

Gargan, who has won 84 races from 344 starters for Midwest, had his most recent runners for the operation in December 2017.

Ness helped put Midwest on the map (and vice versa) during the earlier days of the operation and has trained 1,577 winners from 5,462 Midwest starters. Ness’s most recent starters for Midwest came during January 2016.

Trainer Bret Calhoun joins 3,000-wins club

Trainer Bret Calhoun had his first starters in 1994.

Bret Calhoun became the 30th trainer to win 3,000 races when Most Mischief scored a narrow victory in the eighth race Sunday at Fair Grounds.

Calhoun, a 54-year-old Texas native, had been stalking the milestone for several days.

“Just getting that last win – it’s hard to get over the hump,” Calhoun said. “I had an odds-on favorite lose last night at Houston. It feels great.”

Stevens, Pincay join FOX Sports, NYRA broadcasts

Gary Stevens, the recently retired Hall of Fame jockey, and Laffit Pincay III, a network television analyst, will be part of selected FOX Sports “Saturday at the Races” broadcasts as well as many “NYRA Live” shows this summer, it was announced Thursday.

Dozen new shooters in Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Twelve new names are in the lineup for Pool 2 of the 2019 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Friday at noon Eastern for the customary three-day run.

The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, has been pegged as the 5-2 morning-line favorite in Pool 2 by Churchill Downs linemaker Mike Battaglia, with Game Winner the shortest individually listed interest at 6-1. Then come Improbable (8-1), Instagrand (10-1), and Hidden Scroll (12-1).

Prominent Florida horseman J.B. McKathan dies

J.B. McKathan, who, with brother Kevin, was a proprietor of McKathan Brothers Training Center near Ocala, Fla., has died. He was 53.

“Our hearts are broken today,” the training center posted on Twitter on Sunday. “J.B. McKathan passed last night. Please keep his family in your prayers.”

J.B. and Kevin McKathan, sons of horseman J.B. "Luke" McKathan, started out as racetrack trainers but founded their own operation in 1988. The brothers specialized in breaking and early training but also worked in 2-year-old sales prep, consigning, pinhooking, and as bloodstock agents.

NYRA to request early start to Saratoga meet

NYRA wants to start the Saratoga season on July 11.

The New York Racing Association is seeking approval to extend the 2019 Saratoga meet by one week, with an official announcement coming as soon as this week, sources have confirmed to Daily Racing Form.

If approved, the Saratoga meet would run 40 days, from July 11 through Labor Day, Sept. 2, with racing dark Mondays and Tuesdays. The first week would be four days, and the last week would be six days. Had NYRA maintained its same schedule, Saratoga would have opened July 19.
