Respected Ontario trainer Laurie Silvera, who conditioned Canadian champion Free At Last, died Monday at age 89 in the Milton District Hospital west of Toronto.
Nine new names are in the lineup for Pool 3 of the 2020 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens at noon Eastern on Friday for the customary three-day run.
Pool 3 coincides with the only futures pool toward the 2020 Kentucky Oaks, with an Oaks-Derby double future wager being offered for the third year.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Breeders’ Cup Classic will have a purse of $7 million this year, up from $6 million, and the Breeders’ Cup Turf will offer a purse of $6 million, up from $4 million, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The purse increases, which were approved by the Breeders’ Cup board during a meeting on Feb. 25, are part of a steady run-up in top-level purses around the horse racing world. Last week, the inaugural Saudi Cup was held, offering a purse of $20 million, the richest in the world, and later this month, the Dubai World Cup will offer a $12 million total prize.
Richard Gamez, a jockey who had mounts in every decade since 1970, died as a result of injuries suffered in a fall on the Saturday card at Rillito Park in Tucson, Ariz., according to the track. Gamez was 67.
Gamez, who had 643 wins from 4,642 mounts in a career that stretched back to 1976, was unseated while riding favored Drama Is Overrated in the turn of the stretch of the fifth race, for Thoroughbred maidens at 5 1/2 furlongs on the dirt. He later died of his injuries at Banner University Medical Hospital, according to the Rillito Park Foundation, which runs the track.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The California Horse Racing Board has enacted strict rules effective Sunday at all state racetracks that will greatly reduce the medications horses can be administered after entries are taken for races.
The changes, approved late Thursday, will eliminate the administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, phenylbutazone, flunixin, ketoprofen, electrolyte solutions, and amino acid solutions after a horse has been entered.
Horses can only be given hay, oats, and water from entries to post time with a few exceptions.
John Wayne, the longtime executive director of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission, died Wednesday while visiting New Mexico, according to associates.
Wayne, who had been the head of Delaware’s Thoroughbred regulatory agency since 1999, was well respected by his peers and was known for his thorough knowledge of investigatory practices and racing regulations. A former investigator for the Thoroughbred Racing and Protective Bureau, Wayne annually hosted a meeting of racing stewards and was a stalwart defender of the sport’s rules.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario -- Ontario Racing has announced a $5.89 million Thoroughbred Horse Improvement Program (TIP) Breeders Awards package for 2020-21, including a new Ontario-Sired Reward of Excellence program.
The TIP Breeders Awards program offers rewards to the breeders of the best performing Ontario-breds at Woodbine and Fort Erie. The distribution is based on first-, second-, and third-place finishes in most classes, including Grade 1 stakes such as the Woodbine Mile.
