Scheeler says HISA may present draft rules on safety, integrity in fall

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The principals seeking to implement the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority expect to submit draft rules and regulations to the Federal Trade Commission by the end of this year after several months of deliberation among industry constituencies, the chairman of the authority said Sunday in prerecorded comments broadcast as part of The Jockey Table Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing.

Eddie Fair, longtime mid-Atlantic region jockey agent, dies at 77

Eddie Fair, a longtime jockey’s agent in the mid-Atlantic region who had the book for leading rider Michael McCarthy, died on Friday night of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at his home in Langhorne, Pa., according to his wife, Helene. Eddie Fair was 77.

Fair began his career in 1974 at the former Keystone Park in Philadelphia, according to his wife, when he “didn’t know anything about racing.” His first rider was Joe Mucciolo, who would win the brunt of his 772 career races in the late 1970s and early 1980s with Fair as his agent.

Navarro enters guilty plea in federal doping case

Former trainer Jorge Navarro faces as many as five years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony offense of conspiracy to commit drug adulteration and misbranding with the intent to defraud and mislead.

Jorge Navarro, one of two high-profile trainers indicted last year on charges related to the administration of illegal substances to race horses, on Wednesday entered a plea of guilty to the felony offense of conspiracy to commit drug adulteration and misbranding with the intent to defraud and mislead. The plea could mean as many as five years in prison and subsequent supervised release of as many as three years.

Dr Post points to Pacific Classic, Happy Saver eyes Jockey Club Gold Cup

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - In looking to separate two of his top older male dirt horses, trainer Todd Pletcher will likely send Dr Post to the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 21 while keeping Happy Saver home for the Grade 1, $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga on Sept. 4, the Hall of Fame trainer said Sunday.

Dr Post, runner-up to Tiz the Law in the 2020 Belmont Stakes at 1 1/8 miles, most recently won the Grade 3 Monmouth Cup at Monmouth Park on July 17. It was his first race equipped in blinkers.

Canadian trainer Allain dead at 91

Woodbine has reported the passing of retired trainer Emile Allain at age 91.

Allain was a fixture on the old Ontario Jockey Club circuit for several decades, prior to saddling his last runner in November of 2004 at Woodbine.

Allain recorded 533 wins from 4,341 starters, including 54 stakes scores, and his runners earned $11.6 million. He sent out Keen Falcon to take the 1991 Coronation Futurity at Woodbine, and won the 1992 Dowager Stakes at Keeneland with Green Noble.

Purses increased for Pennsylvania-bred stakes

Purses in four $100,000 stakes for Pennsylvania-bred horses have been doubled and two $100,000 Pennsylvania-bred stakes races have been added to this year’s schedule, according to the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association, which manages Pennsylvania’s state-bred program.

Asmussen ties Baird with win at Ellis Park

Steve Asmussen is bearing down on the late Dale Baird’s all-time record for wins. Going into the week he was within 10 victories of Baird’s total of 9,445.

Steve Asmussen has tied the North American record for wins by a trainer, equaling the late Dale Baird’s total of 9,445 when Shanghai’s Dream won the sixth race at Ellis Park on Friday.

Asmussen is all but certain to set the wins record Saturday, Aug. 7, when he has 14 horses entered in 13 different races at four venues: Ellis, Louisiana Downs, Monmouth, and Saratoga.

Asmussen went 2 for 2 on Friday, with Jalen Journey scoring a sharp win at Saratoga earlier in the day.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – “Welcome,” esteemed race announcer and ceremony emcee Tom Durkin said, looking out at the crowd of current and incoming National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame members and fans gathered in the Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion, just down the street from Saratoga Race Course.

“I don’t think I’ve ever said those words with such joy following last year’s, as Queen Elizabeth would say, ‘annus horribilis,’ ” Durkin said.

Zayat files letter to judge overseeing his bankruptcy case

Ahmed Zayat, who campaigned Horse of the Year American Pharoah, is seeking Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection. He is currently engaged in a dispute with his lawyer over unpaid bills.

Ahmed Zayat, the prominent horse owner who has been sued by his main lender and who has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, told the judge presiding over his bankruptcy case in a personal letter that his brother has been paying his legal bills and that he stopped paying his attorney because the fees were “over the quote we agreed.”
