L.A. County Fair meet welcome development for bettors and horsemen

Los Alamitos opens its Los Angeles County Fair meet on Friday. It runs through Sept. 26.

The Los Angeles County Fair meeting at Los Alamitos begins on Friday. Any Thoroughbred racing in Southern California in the next two weeks will be an improvement from September 2020.

Last year, Santa Anita was awarded racing dates for September by the California Horse Racing Board that had been allotted to Los Alamitos for the county fair meeting since 2014.

Santa Anita was originally scheduled to race seven weeks in September and October of 2020, but raced only five.

Travers-winning trainer Phil Gleaves retires

Phil Gleaves, a multiple graded stakes-winning trainer who has been working around horses for nearly 50 years, has retired from training.

Gleaves, who ran his last horse Sunday at Saratoga, cited two reasons for retiring at this time. One is the lack of suitable help, including exercise riders and grooms, to properly run a stable.

August wagering on U.S. Thoroughbreds up over 2019, number of races down

Total wagering in August on U.S. Thoroughbred races was up 2.5 percent despite a large decline in races compared to the same month two years ago, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, according to figures distributed by Equibase on Sunday.

Average wagering per race in August this year was $340,808, up 16.6 percent compared to the average per-race figure of $292,391 in the same month of 2019. There were 3,539 races in August of this year compared to 4,026 races in August 2019, a decline of 12.1 percent, according to the Equibase figures.

Kentucky Downs, NYRA reach simulcast agreement

Kentucky Downs and the New York Racing Association reached an agreement on a simulcasting contract on Saturday, one day prior to Kentucky Downs starting its meet and thus averting a partial blackout in the two markets.

An agreement between the two companies had stalled earlier in the week over the price of the Kentucky Downs signal and NYRA’s practice of treating on-track bets through its account-wagering company as wagers that would be subjected to a lower rate.

Trainer Molly J. Pearson, who won more than 900 races in a career spanning nearly 40 years, died Wednesday, according to family and friends. She was 56.

Pearson won 914 races, and her runners had purse earnings of more than $11 million. Her best year came in 2005, when she won 54 races and had purse earnings of more than $645,000. This year, she had won 18 times from 110 starters and had purse earnings of $245,453.

Her last runner was Tactical Attack, who finished second in the Coyote Springs Stakes at Arizona Downs on Tuesday.

Louisiana trainer Eddie Johnston dead at 75

Longtime Louisiana trainer Eddie Johnston passed away Saturday, Aug. 28 in Metairie, Louisiana.

Johnston, 75, had been battling cancer for years, his close friend and fellow New Orleans-based trainer Sturges Ducoing said Monday, confirming Johnston’s passing.
