The New York Racing Association has challenged a request by attorneys for Bob Baffert to file an amended complaint in a case centering on NYRA’s ban of the trainer earlier this year, according to a court filing.
Sam Spear, the longtime director of media relations at Golden Gate Fields and the now-defunct Bay Meadows, died early on Saturday morning of complications of sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease, according to multiple reports. Spear was 72.
Golden Gate Fields in Northern California cancelled a nine-race program Sunday after jockeys decided not to ride amid wet and windy conditions, according to steward Richard Lewis.
The decision was made less than 30 minutes before first post time after conversations between riders and track management.
Earlier in the day, Golden Gate’s synthetic main track was open for training, with 49 recorded workouts. Several trainers praised the condition of the track through the morning.
Golden Boi, the winner of the $1.12 million Ed Burke Million Futurity in June, will miss the $1.1 million Golden State Million Futurity at Los Alamitos on Oct. 31 after being hospitalized in recent days with colitis, trainer Valentin Zamudio said Sunday.
Zamudio said Golden Boi has shown improvement over the weekend and that the next week is vital. When Golden Boi was diagnosed, the colt had diarrhea, a common symptom of colitis, Zamudio said.
“Right now, the prognosis is okay,” Zamudio said.
Bob Neumeier, long a mainstay on NBC’s horse racing telecasts and a passionate fan of the sport, died on Saturday after suffering from heart-related issues. He was 70.
Neumeier, a native of Massachusetts affectionately known as “Neumy,” was a long-time sports broadcaster in the Boston area, where he worked on both television and radio. His favorite sports included horse racing and hockey, and he was able to parlay his passion into long-time work in both.

Jack Christopher, 2 for 2 after a dominant victory in the Grade 1 Champagne, worked five furlongs in 1:00.85 Saturday morning in company with the filly Gerrymander. Jack Christopher was well in hand on the outside, getting his final quarter in 24.13 seconds.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Since he owns a fees-paid berth into the race, Following Sea will be likely be pre-entered Monday for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint to buy his connections more time before deciding whether to run, trainer Todd Pletcher said Friday.
Following Sea earned his way into the Nov. 6 Sprint at Del Mar by virtue of his victory in the Grade 2 Vosburgh on Oct. 9. On Friday, Following Sea worked a half-mile in 49.73 seconds over Belmont Park’s training track.
Mishriff, winner of three Group 1 races in Europe and the Middle East this year, will not start in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 6.
Trainer John Gosden said on Thursday that Mishriff is in need “of a little bit of a rest.”
“You need to be 100 percent happy that you’re doing the right thing,” Gosden said. “He’s been a pretty busy boy.”
Mario Pino, the journeyman jockey, won his 7,000th race lifetime on Wednesday when he rode Enjoy the Music to victory in the fourth race at Presque Isle Downs in Pennsylvania, his second win on the card.
Enjoy the Music was the 7-10 favorite in the race. In the second race at Presque Isle on Wednesday, Pino won with Gucci Gal, the 2.40-1 second choice.
