HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Secret Oath has emerged as the dominant 3-year-old of the Oaklawn Park meet, and Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said Saturday the filly will get a shot against male rivals in the Grade 1, $1.25 million Arkansas Derby on April 2.

“We’re going to lead her over there,” he said.

Aqueduct cancels Saturday card as winter storm threatens

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Saturday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct has been canceled due to the forecast of a winter storm that was expected to bring rain, snow, and high winds to the New York City metropolitan area during the afternoon.

It is the sixth cancellation of the winter meet.

Aqueduct was to remain open for simulcasting.

Saturday’s $100,000 Correction Stakes will be run on March 19.

Live racing is expected to resume Sunday with a nine-race card that starts at 1:20 p.m. and includes the $100,000 Damon Runyon Stakes for New York-bred 3-year-olds.

Multiple graded stakes winner Con Lima dies in stall accident

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Con Lima, a multiple graded stakes-winning turf filly in 2021, had to be euthanized after suffering catastrophic injuries in a stall accident, her connections said Thursday.

According to Aron Wellman, president of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, part-owner of the filly, Con Lima was at WinStar Farm in Kentucky where she had recently resumed training after a lengthy break. Wellman said a night watchman found Con Lima down in her stall.

Go for Gin, 1994 Kentucky winner, dies at 31

Go for Gin was the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner until his death at 31 on Tuesday.

Go for Gin, winner of the 1994 Kentucky Derby, died Tuesday at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Hall of Champions due to heart failure. The son of Cormorant was 31.

Go for Gin was the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner. With his death, that distinction now goes to 1996 winner Grindstone, who resides at Oakhurst Farm in Newberg, Ore.

Assiniboia Downs chairman Harvey Warner dies

Harvey Warner served on the board of Assiniboia Downs for more than 20 years.

Harvey Warner, the Canadian racing executive who received a Special Sovereign Award in 2020, died Wednesday, according to Assiniboia Downs, where he was chairman of the board.

Warner served on the board of Assiniboia Downs for more than 20 years. He was credited with rescuing the track from bankruptcy in 1993, forming the Manitoba Jockey Club with several partners in order to keep the track running. A Thoroughbred owner, Warner also was the former president of the Manitoba Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association before forming the MJC.

Joe Bravo plans to be based at Oaklawn Park this winter for the meet that opens Jan. 25.

Joe Bravo, best known for his outsized success at Monmouth Park, where the New Jersey native earned the nickname “Jersey Joe,” on Thursday was announced by Santa Anita as this year’s winner of the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.

Bravo was selected by his fellow riders over four other finalists – Glenn Corbett, Julien Leparoux, Rodney Prescott, and Tim Thornton.

Trainer Jimmy Baker suspended 15 days for metformin positive

Trainer Jimmy Baker has been suspended for 15 days by Kentucky’s stewards after a horse he trains tested positive for the diabetes drug metformin, a substance that had turned up in another trainer’s horse last year after a race in Kentucky as well.

Fed Money, trained by Baker, tested positive for metformin after winning a maiden-claiming race on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs, according to the stewards’ ruling. Metformin is cataloged as a Class B drug in Kentucky.

Two Parx barns under quarantine after suspected equine herpes infection

Parx Racing has suspended live racing for at least two weeks.

Two barns at Parx racetrack outside Philadelphia have been placed under quarantine due to a suspected case of equine herpesvirus, a highly contagious disease, according to the track’s racing secretary.

David Osojnak, the racing secretary, said the quarantines were put in place after a horse exhibiting symptoms of equine herpesvirus was euthanized at the track on Sunday. The track has not determined how long the quarantine will be in place, but the track is also not allowing horses to ship out for the time being, Osojnak said.
