ARCADIA, Calif. – When Tim Yakteen first pedaled over to Los Alamitos, he could never have imagined the ride he’d end up on.

He was 18, newly arrived in the United States from Germany, living in an apartment in Cypress, Calif., and the only mode of transportation he had was a bicycle, which limited the scope of his job search.

“I needed to be able to bike to work,” he said.

Dell Hancock to receive Phipps Award

Dell Hancock, shown in 2013, is chairman of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and has been on its board since 1985.

Dell Hancock, a longtime member of The Jockey Club and the chairman of its research foundation since 2004, has been named the recipient of the Dinny Phipps Award, which was created in 2017 to honor an individual who has “demonstrated dedication to equine health,” The Jockey Club announced on Tuesday.

Hancock, whose family owns Claiborne Farm in Central Kentucky, was appointed to the board of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation in 1985. She has served two terms on The Jockey Club’s board of stewards and is currently a member of its Thoroughbred Safety Committee.

Baffert's attorneys seek to withdraw request for injunction to stop Churchill Downs ban

Attorneys for suspended Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert have asked a federal court in Kentucky to allow them to withdraw a request for a preliminary injunction that would have stopped Churchill Downs from enforcing a two-year ban of the trainer, according to court filings.

Owner Loretta Brennan, 65, dies due to injuries from fall

Owner Loretta Brennan died March 31 due to head and neck injuries sustained in a fall at home, according to her husband, trainer Terry Brennan. Loretta Brennan was 65.

Terry Brennan said his wife was getting ready to go to a concert with her sister when she fell from the staircase. The Brennans were set to celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary Friday. 

“We have six children, 10 grandchildren,” Terry Brennan said. “I’ve lost parents and a brother, and it’s nothing like losing your wife. I’ve been a wreck.”

Trainer Potts will serve suspensions totaling 75 days

Embattled trainer Wayne Potts will serve an overall 75 calendar days’ suspension - April 10 through June 23 - after the New York State Gaming Commission hit him with a 45-day penalty for a drug found in his Belmont Park tack room that has not been approved by the FDA for use in Thoroughbred horses.

The commission issued the ruling Sunday.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Yuugiri is scheduled to ship to Keeneland on Monday as her connections determine whether she will advance to the Kentucky Oaks following her win over Beguine in the Grade 3, $600,000 Fantasy on Saturday at Oaklawn Park.

Yuugiri picked up 100 points for the Kentucky Oaks, which will be run May 6 at Churchill Downs. She was a half-length winner of the Fantasy and for the effort earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 86.
