Derby-bound White Abarrio has impressive work between Gulfstream races

White Abarrio worked between the final two races on Saturday’s Gulfstream Park program.

After having his final Kentucky Derby work postponed this morning due to wet track conditions, White Abarrio finally got to strut his stuff shortly after 6 p.m. and between the final two races on Saturday’s Gulfstream Park program, working four furlongs in 48.11 followed by a very strong and impressive gallop out.

White Abarrio went easily to the wire, was urged on to complete five-eighths into the turn in 1:00.12 then continued full of run, completing six panels in 1:11.94 and seven furlongs in 1:24.81 before pulling up after a mile in 1:41.64.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Saturday was the busiest morning yet on the Kentucky Derby/Oaks workout front at Churchill Downs. The majority of the action took place during a very hectic special training session that happens daily beginning at 7:30 a.m. and is restricted to horses competing in the two big events here next weekend.

Giannelli defense attorney cross-examines former harness trainer Cohen

NEW YORK - An attorney for a Delaware supplement marketer accused of distributing misbranded or adulterated substances to horse trainers spent the third day of her trial on Friday cross-examining a key government witness.

Former New York harness trainer Ross Cohen had testified on Thursday that the distributor, Lisa Giannelli, had sold him performance enhancing drugs that he administered to his horses.

NYRA racing secretary Doleshel fined $2,000

The New York Gaming Commission fined New York Racing Association racing secretary Keith Doleshel $2,000 for allowing the unauthorized participation of Soaring Mist in two races during the Aqueduct winter meet.

Soaring Mist, a 4-year-old daughter of Soaring Empire, raced in two maiden claiming races restricted to New York-breds though, at the time, she was not a registered New York-bred. On Feb. 19, in a maiden $25,000 claiming race, Soaring Mist finished seventh of nine. On March 25, she finished fifth of six in the same class of race.

Mike Repole buys interest in Kentucky Derby-bound Mo Donegal

A minority interest in Wood Memorial winner Mo Donegal has been sold to Mike Repole in advance of the colt's run in next Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, majority owner Donegal Racing announced Friday.

Repole, whose racing silks feature the blue and orange colors of his beloved New York Mets, campaigned Mo Donegal's sire, 2010 Eclipse Award champion juvenile Uncle Mo. That Coolmore stallion has already sired a Kentucky Derby winner in Nyquist. Uncle Mo was trained by Todd Pletcher, who also handles Mo Donegal.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- – It was Ladies Day at Churchill Downs on Friday morning, although with a little wrinkle thrown in during the special Derby-Oaks training session, which takes place from 7:30 to 7:45 a.m. daily. Six likely Oaks starters and a seventh hoping to draw into the race here next Friday turned in their final works, although all were overshadowed somewhat by the appearance of potential Derby favorite Zandon, who made his way onto the work tab 24 hours earlier than expected.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Notwithstanding drama that preceded the workout and the noise he made during the work, Messier posted a visually impressive drill on an eventful Friday morning at Santa Anita.

Runner-up in the Santa Anita Derby and among the top contenders for the Kentucky Derby, Messier was about to commence his six-furlong workout following the 6:30 a.m. track renovation when another horse lost its rider and ran loose into the far turn.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The weather forecast for Saturday was improving by the time trainer Chad Brown arrived at Churchill Downs early Friday morning. But he decided it was better to go with what was in front of him than risk chancing a different track Saturday morning, so out went the highly regarded Zandon for his final workout for the May 7 Kentucky Derby, highlighting a morning of activity here that otherwise focused on fillies in the May 6 Kentucky Oaks.

Testimony gets started in Giannelli trial

NEW YORK – A trial of a Delaware supplements distributor accused of supplying illegal substances to horse trainers got under way Thursday, concluding with the testimony of an ex-harness trainer turned government cooperating witness.

“The defendant wasn’t just in the doping business, she was in the deception business,” prosecutor Benjamin Gianforti told the jury in U.S. District Court in New York, referring to Lisa Gianelli, who worked as a distributor for a supplements manufacturer who has already been convicted.

Mystic Guide's comeback attempt aborted, will stand stud in 2023

Dubai World Cup winner Mystic Guide is expected to be sent to Fair Grounds and trainer Michael Stidham soon after having had a knee chip removed.

Mystic Guide, the 2021 Dubai World Cup winner who was stymied several times while attempting a comeback, has been retired from racing with a soft-tissue injury, owner-breeder Godolphin announced on Thursday afternoon. He will begin his stud career at the operation's Kentucky stallion farm in the 2023 season.
