Bills introduced to fund reconstruction of Belmont Park

NYRA's renovation plan for Belmont Park would require $455 million in bonds to be issued and take approximately three years to complete.

Legislators in New York have introduced bills in the Senate and General Assembly that would authorize the issuance of state-backed bonds that would allow the New York Racing Association to fund the complete reconstruction of Belmont Park on Long Island.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Fans who climbed aboard the Epicenter or Zandon bandwagon well before each colt established himself as a Kentucky Derby favorite have an edge on their fellow futures bettors.

Zandon was 56-1 and Epicenter was 52-1 in the first of five pools in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager offered by Churchill Downs ahead of the 148th Run for the Roses. Aggregate handle (win and exacta) was nearly $1.9 million. Those pools were held Nov. 25-28, January 21-23, Feb. 11-13, March 11-13, and April 7-9.

Kentucky Derby: Crown Pride continues to stand out on the track

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There were two Kentucky Derby winners on the racetrack Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs.

One is bit a of a premature call, as a winner will be crowned Saturday from the 20 who are set to run in this year’s race, all of whom were on the track Wednesday morning for training, with Crown Pride and Taiba turning in final workouts.

The other was Mandaloun, who is now the 2021 Derby winner following the disqualification of Medina Spirit, which elevated runner-up Mandaloun to the top spot.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The annual Kentucky Thoroughbred Association’s Kentucky Derby Trainers’ Dinner always includes a trophy presentation to the reigning Derby-winning trainer. This year’s honoree, Brad Cox, was quick to acknowledge the elephant in the room Tuesday night at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville.

“Obviously, everyone in the room knows this has been a very different way of getting to the Derby winner’s circle, or accepting a Derby win,” Cox said. “But I’m very proud of Mandaloun and the race that he ran.”

Federal prosecutors wrap up case against Giannelli

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Federal prosecutors called their final witnesses on Tuesday at the trial in New York of an equine supplements distributor charged with adulterating and misbranding drugs.

The end of the government's case sets the stage for what could be the trial's climax: the testimony of the defendant, Lisa Giannelli, in her own defense. The trial resumes on Wednesday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Weather was the story on Tuesday at Churchill Downs, with rain, heavy at times, beginning just as the track opened for training and continuing right up to the first renovation break nearly two hours later. The strip was sealed and sloppy the entire morning, including during the special Kentucky Derby/Oaks session at 7:30 a.m.

Marty McGee is the recipient of this year's John Asher Derby Ambassador Award, which honors a person or persons who have made major contributions to the sport of Thoroughbred racing.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Marty McGee of Daily Racing Form on Tuesday evening was presented with the 2022 John Asher Derby Ambassador Award at the Knights of Columbus 60th annual Kentucky Derby Festival Charity Dinner at the Galt House in downtown Louisville.

The event is sponsored annually by Bishop Spalding Council of the Knights of Columbus to raise funds for charitable organizations in the Louisville area.
