Jockey Luis Saez notches 3,000th career win aboard Funny Joke

Jockey Luis Saez will move his tack back to Belmont Park after the Kentucky Derby.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Jockey Luis Saez recorded the 3,000th win of his career Sunday at Belmont Park when he guided Funny Joke to victory in the sixth race for trainer Rudy Rodriguez.

“I’m feeling pretty happy, pretty blessed,” Saez said. “To get 3,000 winners is a lot for me. I never imagined I was going to be here. But we’re here and we just enjoy the moment.”

The win came on the one-year anniversary of arguably his biggest career achievement, also accomplished at Belmont Park, when he won the Belmont Stakes last year on Essential Quality.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Golden Glider, the Peter Pan Stakes runner-up, completed his preparations for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes by working an easy half-mile in 49.94 seconds Sunday morning over Belmont Park’s main track.

A day after six prospective Belmont contenders put in workouts, Golden Glider was the only Belmont Stakes runner to breeze on Sunday.

Woodbine to eliminate $20K and $40K open claiming races

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The complexion of the middle and upper claiming ranks changes at Woodbine in the upcoming Condition Book 4 with the elimination of open $20,000 and $40,000 claimers.

The other races eliminated in the new book are: open allowances; first-level allowances for 3-year-olds with a $75,000-claiming option; first-level allowances for 3-year-olds and up; and second-level allowances with a $62,500-claiming option for 3-year-olds up.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Consumer Spending will look to build off her solid victory in the Memories of Silver Stakes in April at Aqueduct when she heads a field of seven 3-year-olds entered Saturday for Thursday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Wonder Again Stakes at Belmont Park.

The Wonder Again, scheduled for 1 1/8 miles on turf, is one of three stakes carded for a nine-race program that kicks off the three-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, in which 17 stakes are scheduled over three days culminating with the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on July 11.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainer Peter Miller, who ceased operating a stable in his name last November, was fined $10,000 and suspended seven days on Saturday as part of a stipulated agreement with the California Horse Racing Board regarding his actions involving the day-to-day operation of a stable run by his former assistant, Ruben Alvarado.

ELMONT, N.Y. – It was the calm after the storm Friday morning at Belmont Park.

With the two dirt tracks at Belmont still pretty wet Friday morning following Thursday’s heavy afternoon rains, there was not much serious training going on in preparation for the Belmont Stakes on June 11. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. postponed a scheduled Friday morning breeze for Preakness fifth-place finisher Skippylongstocking until Saturday.

California Horse Racing Board files complaints against Peter Miller and trainer Ruben Alvarado

Peter Miller turned his stable over to trainer Ruben Alvarado last fall. The CHRB complaint alleges that Miller has "engaged in behavior consistent with the duties of a trainer" while the horses have run under Alvarado's name.

Trainers Ruben Alvarado and Peter Miller face possible sanctions from the California Horse Racing Board after the regulatory agency filed complaints in late May alleging they improperly handled daily training and business affairs related to the large stable Miller relinquished to Alvarado last fall.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Shortly after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike was led out of his stall in Belmont Park’s Barn 29 by groom by Jerry Dixon Jr. Eric Reed, the trainer of Rich Strike, looked at Dixon and said, “Good luck.”

After making one turn around the barn, Dixon came back maintaining a somewhat awkward-looking hold of Rich Strike.

“He broke the shank,” said Dixon, who relayed to Reed the horse had reared up on the walk.

Judge rejects Fishman's claim of 'double jeopardy'

A federal judge has denied a motion from the convicted veterinarian Seth Fishman to have one of the two counts in his conviction thrown out, according to court records.

Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York denied the motion on the grounds that prosecutors in his trial had proved that Fishman engaged in two separate conspiracies. A jury found Fishman guilty on two counts of conspiracy to commit drug adulteration or misbranding in February. Vyskocil presided over the trial.

Owner-breeder Sarah Ramsey dies at 83

Sarah Ramsey, with her husband, Ken, were named champion owner four times and champion breeder twice.

Sarah Kathern Ramsey, who, along with her husband, Ken, became one of the leading owners and breeders in North America, died May 29 at her home on Ramsey Farm in Nicholasville, Ky., with her family by her side. She was 83.
