Lone Star cancels Sunday card due to severe heat

Lone Star Park near Dallas has canceled its Sunday card on an afternoon of severe heat in North Texas.

The track announced it made the call in consultation with the local riding colony.

In the past, the Texas heat has forced the cancellation of a handful of days of racing at Lone Star.

Forecasters have been warning of extreme heat in the region this weekend, with the high for the area on Sunday projected to be 104 degrees.

Lone Star races some nights, but has day posts on Saturdays and Sundays.

Racing is scheduled to resume Thursday night.

But Brown has returned with a vengeance, and after an incredible Belmont Stakes weekend has the inside track on another Eclipse in 2022.

Asmussen says Clairiere likely to run in Personal Ensign

Emily Shields
Clairiere (outside), defeating champion older female Malathaat in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps, may return in the Azeri Stakes March 11 at Oaklawn, if not before then.

ELMONT, N.Y - Malathaat won three Grade 1 races last year to earn an Eclipse Award as North America’s champion 3-year-old filly. She finished ahead of Clairiere in all three of those races as well as in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff last November when the two fillies finished third and fourth.

On Saturday, Clairiere finally finished in front of Malathaat, beating her by a head in the Grade 1, $500,000 Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park. Clairiere also defeated Letruska, the reigning older dirt female champion, who finished last.

Mo Donegal, trained by Todd Pletcher, was given a 98 Beyer Speed Figure for his victory in Saturday's Belmont Stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The blanket of carnations draped over the railing by the parking spot marked for trainer Todd Pletcher at his barn Sunday morning told the story of Saturday's Belmont Stakes. On Sunday morning, they were decoration, but on Saturday, they were laid across the withers of Mo Donegal, who provided Pletcher with his fourth Belmont victory in a race in which he swept the top two spots.

Hollendorfer, 1/ST Racing reach confidential agreement

Barbara D. Livingston
The New York Racing Association will permit Jerry Hollendorfer to race at its tracks.

The parent company of Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields has reached a confidential settlement agreement with Jerry Hollendorfer in a lawsuit the Hall of Fame trainer filed against the company after it banned him from the tracks in 2019, officials said on Friday.

Drew Couto, Hollendorfer’s attorney, said that the terms of the settlement do not allow him to comment on the agreement, including whether Hollendorfer will now be allowed to enter horses at the two tracks.

Royal Ascot: Ward, Ortiz will be teaming up

Emily Shields
Golden Pal ended 2021 with this 107-Beyer victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. But that win came over firm turf, and Golden Pal might have to run over soft turf in the Shakertown.

With every passing year there’s increased American excitement over the Royal Ascot meet. No one in America should be more excited for the 2022 Royal meeting, which runs Tuesday through Saturday, than New York-based jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.

Ortiz never has ridden at Ascot, but trainer Wesley Ward, a regular Royal Ascot winner, has tapped Ortiz to ride his five starters.

“It’s one of those places I really want to go, a special place where they care so much about the sport, and I love that. I can’t wait,” Ortiz said Thursday at Belmont.

Rich Strike owner Dawson looks to conquer another world in the Belmont

Barbara D. Livingston
Rich Strike owner Rick Dawson has just two horses in training and has only owned 10 or 11 in his life. Dawson claimed Rich Strike for $30,000 eight months before his Derby victory.

For owner Rick Dawson, winning the Kentucky Derby was an out-of-this-world experience.

“What planet is this?” Dawson said. “I feel like I have been propelled somewhere. I’m not sure. This is unbelievable. I asked my trainer up on the stage, I said, ‘Are you sure this is not a dream? Because it can’t be true.’ He assured me, ‘This is real.’ ”
