Epicenter now points to his elders in BC Classic

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Having taken control of the 3-year-old division with his dominant victory in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga, Epicenter will now be prepared to take on a tough group of older horses this fall as he targets the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Nov. 5.

Leading that group of older horses are Flightline, the undefeated colt who makes his second start of 2022 in Saturday’s Pacific Classic at Del Mar, and Life Is Good, a three-time graded stakes winner this year including the Grade 1 Whitney four weeks ago.

Corniche, Eclipse Award champ at 2, retired

Corniche, last year's Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old male, has been retired from racing and will enter stud in 2023 at Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Kentucky after emerging from his only start this season with an injury.

Corniche, by Quality Road, won all three of his outings last year for Peter Fluor and K.C. Weiner's Speedway Stables, which purchased him for $1.5 million at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s spring sale, and trainer Bob Baffert. That included consecutive Grade 1 wins in the American Pharoah Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile to secure his divisional title.

Churchill suspends turf racing for September meeting

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There will be no turf racing at the September meet at Churchill Downs because of continuing problems with the new turf course, although turf racing “is projected to return for the fall meet,” according to a Tuesday release from the track.

The condition book for the 14-day September meet that runs Sept. 15 to Oct. 2 was released Monday without any races scheduled for turf. The full stakes schedules were released Tuesday for both the September meet and the 19-day fall meet, which runs Oct. 30 to Nov. 27.

Baffert takes stand on first day of suspension appeal hearing

A hearing into an appeal by the trainer Bob Baffert of a 90-day suspension he served earlier this year began on Monday with Baffert taking the stand as the first witness called by attorneys representing Kentucky’s stewards, according to officials involved in the appeal.

Baffert was the sole witness to appear during the first day of the hearing, which began at 1 p.m. Eastern in an office building in Frankfort, Ky. Baffert was called by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission’s general counsel, Jennifer Wolsing, who is representing the state’s stewards.

Apollitical Candy V, Fdd Scout top qualifiers for All American Derby

Apollitical Candy V, the winner of the Rainbow Derby in July, and Fdd Scout, second in the $3 million All American Futurity last September, are the two fastest qualifiers for the $808,264 All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs on Sept. 4 after eight time trials on Sunday.

Apollitical Candy V ran 440 yards in 21.227 seconds to win the fourth of eight trials, slightly quicker than Fdd Scout’s time of 21.288 seconds set in the second division.

Jockey Baze off mounts again on Sunday

Tyler Baze had a busy and prodcutive summer riding on different circuits.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Jockey Tyler Baze had to take off his mounts on Sunday at Del Mar after having traces of a prescribed medication in his system for the fourth straight day. The medication was taken once last Monday when his blood pressure spiked, and his physician told Baze and his agent, Jack Carava, that it should clear by Thursday.

Instead, Baze ended up not riding the entire week at Del Mar after taking off the prior week to attend to what stewards described as "personal matters" with his family. As a result, Baze has now missed the last two weeks of racing here.
