Jockey Ry Eikleberry to retire from saddle

Jockey Ry Eikleberry said he plans to retire from race riding following the closing night card Saturday at Canterbury Park.

Eikleberry enters Saturday with 2,786 wins from 15,968 starts. He has mount earnings of more than $48 million. He won for the first time in 2005 at Arapahoe Park.

“It’s been a long, good career, and to be honest, I’m just ready for a change,” Eikleberry said Saturday. “Although it’s been good, my body is not exactly made for the sport long term.”

Eikleberry, a 33-year-old native of Phoenix, is tall for a rider at 5 feet, 9 inches.

Former Suffolk Downs owner eying new site in Mass. for boutique race meet

A former co-owner of Suffolk Downs in Massachusetts plans to resurrect live racing in the state as early as next year, using a boutique-meet model similar to Kentucky Downs, according to officials involved in the project.

Kentucky Derby, Oaks points system gets a few tweaks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Officials at Churchill Downs announced Friday a series of slight modifications to the points system governing entry into the Kentucky Derby and Oaks in coming years, including toward next May, when both classics will be renewed. The series of preps toward the 2023 runnings were to begin Saturday with two Grade 3 races, the Iroquois and Pocahontas at Churchill.

Brown hearing delayed until Oct. 21

A hearing to consider a charge of criminal obstruction of breathing lodged against trainer Chad Brown has been re-scheduled for Oct. 21, an official in Saratoga Springs city court said on Friday.

Brown, a four-time Eclipse Award winner for champion trainer, was scheduled to appear for the hearing on Friday after an initial hearing on Sept. 2 was delayed. The city clerk of Saratoga Springs said the delays were requested by the attorneys involved in the case.

CYPRESS, Calif. - An attorney representing California trainer Richard Baltas argued before a panel of stewards on Wednesday that his client should be fined for violations related to the administration of race-day supplements at Santa Anita in April and May and should not face a formal suspension.

Kentucky Downs cancels Sunday card after two races due to heavy rain

FRANKLIN, Ky. – After running two races, Kentucky Downs canceled the remainder of its 11-race card Sunday because of course conditions.

Following a morning rain that left the turf-only track rated “good,” a heavy rainstorm came down for 20 minutes or so, leaving the grass soaked. Jockeys informed the stewards about 20 minutes after the second race that they preferred not to ride any further.

Hastings cancels card due to poor air quality

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Due to poor air quality caused by wildfires in British Columbia and the United States, and from a fire that started Saturday morning at a wood recycling plant in Vancouver that is still burning, Sunday's seven-race card at Hastings has been canceled.

According to local HBPA president Dave Milburn, the card will run intact next Saturday.

Jean Chalk, a racing official for 50 years in Kentucky, Maryland, and other jurisdictions, died early Sunday in hospice care in Florence, Ky., from long-term effects of a stroke. He was 88.
