Kentucky Derby 2023: Points bar set high this year

Lou Hodges Jr.
Angel of Empire, slotted for Saturday's Arkansas Derby, is one of only four horses in the top 19 on the Kentucky Derby points list in action this weekend.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The phrase “one shining moment” will be heard frequently this weekend, especially here in South Florida, where two schools qualified for the Final Four of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament to be held in Houston.

Horsemen, both in South Florida and approximately 1,200 miles away in Arkansas, will be hoping many of their heretofore unheralded 3-year-olds – Cinderellas if you will – can have one shining moment Saturday in either the Florida Derby or Arkansas Derby in hopes of qualifying for the Kentucky Derby on May 6.

Wild On Ice, upset winner of Sunday’s Sunland Park Derby, was among a group of 13 3-year-olds who were made eligible for the Triple Crown, their connections paying a $6,000 late nomination fee by Monday’s deadline.

There were 12 horses announced on Tuesday; on Wednesday a 13th horse, Empirestrikesfast, was added to the list after a clerical error was discovered.

Southlawn shows up for Fair Ground Oaks, shows she's ready to run in Kentucky Oaks

Barbara D. Livingston
Southlawn received an 86 Beyer Speed Figure for the victory in the Fair Grounds Oaks on Saturday.

Despite Southlawn’s eight-length victory in an allowance race on Feb. 17 in her 3-year-old debut,  trainer Norm Casse tried to temper his enthusiasm entering Saturday’s Fair Grounds Oaks.

“We’ve been burned before by horses that have won by open lengths and come back with a big number and then run against tougher and don’t show up,” Casse said.

In the Fair Grounds Oaks, Southlawn showed up in a big way, rolling to a 3 1/4-length victory over Pretty Mischievous to put herself among the top contenders for the Kentucky Oaks on May 5 at Churchill Downs.

Kingsbarns shows he knows way to Kentucky Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Kingsbarns was given a 95 Beyer Speed Figure for Saturday's victory in the Louisiana Derby.

When the principals of Spendthrift Farm sent Kingsbarns to Todd Pletcher last October, they weren’t necessarily thinking he was going to have time to develop into a Kentucky Derby horse.

Kingsbarns, a son of Uncle Mo, was purchased for $800,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream auction after breezing a quarter in 20.60 seconds, and needed some time to get over some seemingly minor issues.
