Jockey Club Round Table to focus on HISA, computer-assisted wagering

This year’s Jockey Club Round Table Conference on Racing on Aug. 3 in Saratoga Springs will feature two panel discussions, one focused on the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority and the other on the impact of computer-assisted wagering on racetracks and bettors.

The two panels will anchor a two-hour lineup of speakers put together by The Jockey Club for its annual Round Table, held this year for the first time on a Thursday instead of its typical Sunday slot.

McLean Robertson, a Midwestern trainer who has annually topped $2 million in earnings for the past decade, has been issued a provisional suspension after a gelding he trained tested positive for altrenogest, an estrogen suppressant that is banned for use in geldings under the rules being enforced by the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit.

Churchill reinstates ban on Baffert through 2024

Churchill Downs Inc. has reinstated a ban of the trainer Bob Baffert from its properties through the end of 2024, citing “continued concerns regarding the threat to the safety and integrity of racing he poses” to CDI-owned racetracks.

Slammed, TCA Stakes winner, retired amid foot problems

Slammed, the winner of the Grade 2 TCA Stakes at Keeneland last October and five stakes in New Mexico earlier in her career, has been retired because of chronic foot problems, trainer and co-breeder Todd Fincher said on Sunday.

Slammed, a 5-year-old mare by the Bernardini stallion Marking, has not raced since she finished last of 12 in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland last November. In her preceding start, Slammed won the most prestigious race of her career in the $350,000 TCA Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs.

Trainer Wong suspended following banned-substance positive test on one of his starters

Jonathan Wong has won 1,194 races since his career began in 2014, including a career-best 236 races in 2021.

Jonathan Wong, a perennial leading trainer in Northern California who has a stable of more than 110 horses in California and the Midwest, has been provisionally suspended by the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit after one of his starters at Horseshoe Indianapolis tested positive for a banned substance on June 1.

The positive was announced on HIWU’s website over the weekend.

Heaven and Earth, the winner of a maiden race for Indiana-bred fillies, tested positive for metformin, a medication prescribed for diabetes.

Hollendorfer hands over Monmouth stable to longtime assistant

Hall of fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has handed over his Monmouth stable to his long-time assistant Dan Ward but will keep a couple horses for the upcoming Del Mar meet.

Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has relinquished control of his 29-horse stable at Monmouth Park to his longtime assistant, Dan Ward, but said he plans to continue training a smaller stable in California.

The plan, which went into effect on Saturday, was first announced by Monmouth Park in a statement.

Hollendorfer, 77, is based for most of the year at Los Alamitos in Orange County, Calif., and said on Saturday that he plans to have a small stable based at Del Mar for the track’s summer meeting from July 21 to Sept. 10.

Belmont cancels racing over increasingly worse air quality

Belmont Park has canceled their nine-race card for Friday. Tomorrow's card will feature the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes and the Grade 2 John A. Nerud Stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. — Belmont Park’s nine-race Friday card was canceled due to a rapid decline in air quality stemming from the Canadian wildfires. It is the second such cancellation in three weeks.

Belmont also canceled the June 8 card for the same reason.

Horses were tacked up and jockeys were in the paddock minutes before the opener, scheduled for 1:05 p.m. However, state and track officials decided that the air quality was getting worse and decided to call off the card.

Churchill lifts Joseph's ban after necropsies on horses prove inconclusive

Saffie Joseph Jr. had been banned indefinitely by Churchill Downs after two of his horses died suddenly at the track during the opening week of its spring meeting.

Necropsy reports for the two horses trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. who died of sudden deaths at Churchill Downs in the lead-up to the Kentucky Derby on May 6 did not find any conclusive causes for the deaths, according to the reports.

Woodbine, Laurel cancel Friday cards due to air quality

Woodbine outside Toronto, Canada, and Laurel Park in Maryland made early decisions to cancel their live race cards Friday, as smoke from wildfires in Canada continues to cause problems with air quality through the East and Midwest.

In a statement, Woodbine said that local authorities have forecast that the area’s air quality will be “high risk” through Friday afternoon. The decision to cancel was made in consultation with their local horsemen’s group, Woodbine said.

Ferndale grandstand needs $1 million in repairs due to earthquake damage

The grandstand at the Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale, Calif., has been deemed unsafe because of recent earthquake damage and will need $1 million in emergency repairs before the start of county fair in late August, according to published reports in Northern California.

Larry Swartzlander, the executive director of the California Authority of Racing Fairs, told the California Horse Racing Board at its monthly meeting on Thursday that Humboldt fair executives have hired a contractor who can complete the seismic safety work by the first of August.
