Jason Servis sentenced to four years in prison; must report by Nov. 1

Jason Servis will serve four years in prison after pleading guilty to one felony charge and one misdemeanor charge. He is the 21st person sentenced to prison as a result of a wide-ranging federal investigation into drug abuse at racetracks.

Prairie Meadows trainer Clark has two horses test positive for methamphetamine

Author and journalist Milton Toby dead at 73

Milton Toby, a longtime contributor to The Blood-Horse who wrote several books of racing history, died on Monday at his home in Georgetown of cancer, according to his family. Toby was 73.

A native of Campbellsville, Ky., Toby graduated from the University of Kentucky and began his career as a general sports reporter in South Carolina, but he quickly migrated to Thoroughbred racing. He was hired by The Blood-Horse, which was then a weekly newsmagazine, in 1973, and spent the next 12 years at the publication, both as a reporter and a photographer.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Two claims at Santa Anita in early June have been voided after the runners tested positive for controlled or prohibited substances under rules enacted earlier this year by the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Authority, according to rulings published on Saturday by Del Mar stewards.

As of Sunday, only one of the two horses had been returned to its previous owners as ordered, according to people involved with the claims.

McLean Robertson, a trainer based in the Midwest, has had a provisional suspension lifted after a split sample for a gelding he trained tested negative for altrenogest, an estrogen suppressant that is banned for use in male horses under rules that went into effect in May.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Jockey Abel Cedillo was transported to a local hospital on Sunday afternoon after he was involved in a one-horse spill shortly after the start of the fourth race at Del Mar.

Cedillo was complaining of pain in his neck and was scheduled to undergo X-rays late Sunday afternoon, according to a track official.

Cedillo was injured after his mount, Get the Gold, clipped heels when the runner to his outside, Silver N Black, drifted inside sharply at the start.

Elite Power works half-mile for Vanderbilt showdown with Gunite

Elite Power is expected to meet Gunite in Saturday’s Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Elite Power and Gunite each put in workouts Sunday morning at Saratoga as they gear up for a second of what could be several meetings this year in Saturday’s Grade 1, $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap.

Following the first renovation break, Elite Power, the reigning sprint champion who has won seven straight races, went a half-mile in 51.33 seconds over the Oklahoma training track.

“That’s him by himself,” Bill Mott, the trainer of Elite Power, said, “He’s run well off those kinds of works right before his races.”

Practical Move training again, no races targeted yet

DEL MAR, Calif. - Practical Move, unraced since a win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in April, recently resumed training at Del Mar, trainer Tim Yakteen said over the weekend.

Practical Move was scratched from the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs two days before the May 6 race because of illness and remained in Kentucky for several weeks before returning to California.

Yakteen said no race goals have been finalized for Practical Move, who has yet to have a workout this summer through Sunday.

Cave Rock galloping, could return to racing in coming months

Cave Rock was runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Cave Rock, unraced since a second-place finish to Forte in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland in November, is currently galloping at Del Mar for a return to racing in coming months.

“He should be breezing in the next few weeks,” trainer Bob Baffert said on Sunday.

Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, Cave Rock has won 3 of 4 starts and earned $748,000. Last summer, Cave Rock won his debut against maidens and the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs at the Del Mar summer meeting.

Therapist 'most likely' will target Kentucky Turf Cup, Maker says

Therapist was given a 100 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the United Nations Stakes.

Therapist and Catnip, first and second Saturday at Monmouth Park in the Grade 1, $600,000 United Nations Stakes, could both make their next start at Kentucky Downs, but not in the same race.  

Therapist, at age 8, captured his first Grade 1 and has won three of five since trainer Mike Maker claimed the gelding for owner Michael Dubb for $50,000 in January. He won the Grade 2 Pan American with a 95 Beyer Speed Figure on April 1 and ran better than that Saturday, firing home with a 34.86 final three furlongs to win the 1 3/8-mile contest by 1 1/2 lengths, going away.
