Hall of Fame jockey Boulanger, who won Queen's Plate aboard Dancethruthedawn, retires

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Hall of Fame jockey Gary Boulanger, whose numerous career highlights include a Queen’s Plate victory on Dancethruthedawn, has announced his retirement.

“It’s the right time,” Boulanger said. “I don’t feel I have anything left to prove. I am so grateful to all the trainers, owners and my fellow riders for their support. Just like anyone who rides horses, there are many ups and downs, but you always find a way to persevere.”

Boulanger retires with 3,698 career victories, including 239 stakes, for earnings of over $83 milllion.

Cox sends out Hit Show in search of fourth Oklahoma Derby victory

Hit Show will be adding blinkers when he runs in the Oklahoma Derby on Saturday.

Hit Show will have to overcome post 13 when he attempts to give trainer Brad Cox a fourth win in the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby next Sunday, Sept. 24, at Remington Park.

The 1 1/8-mile race is the richest of the meet and anchors a card of eight stakes worth more than $1 million. First post is 3 p.m. Central.

California Legislature passes bill redirecting NoCal simulcasting revenue

When Golden Gate closes, if other Northern California tracks aren't assigned racing dates, Northern California simulcasting revnue would be redirected to Southern California.

Legislation that will redirect revenue from simulcasting and account wagering in Northern California to tracks in Southern California when racing is not being held in the north sailed through the California Legislature without opposition on Wednesday and Thursday.

The bill passed the state assembly on Wednesday and the senate on Thursday and will be sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has until mid-October to sign or veto the legislation.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Trainer Bob Baffert and owner Amr Zedan have filed a petition in Franklin Circuit Court in Kentucky seeking judicial review of the penalties that were handed down after Medina Spirit tested positive for a regulated medication in the 2021 Kentucky Derby, which landed Baffert a 90-day suspension and led to the disqualification of the colt from the race.

Point Given turns into the stretch en route to a 12 1/4-length win in the 2001 Belmont Stakes.

Point Given, the 2001 Horse of the Year, died on Sept. 11 at his home, the Kentucky Horse Park's Hall of Champions. The dual classic-winning son of Thunder Gulch was 25.

“Point Given was a special horse, loved by all, and a wonderful ambassador for the Kentucky Horse Park,” Kentucky Horse Park president Lee Carter said in a release. “We are saddened by his passing but grateful for the memories created and our time with the Big Red Train.”

DEL MAR, Calif. - Even after a night’s sleep, trainer Richard Mandella had Tamara on his mind all Sunday morning, a day after the filly’s easy win in Saturday’s Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante.

Mandella could not contain a smile.

“I ain’t over it yet,” he said.

The Del Mar Debutante may be the first of several stakes wins for Tamara, an impeccably bred filly who scored a brilliant performance in the $303,500 Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies.

Longtime Baffert vet Baker placed on probation

Vince Baker, the longtime veterinarian for trainer Bob Baffert, has been placed on probation by the California Veterinary Medical Board for four years as part of a stipulated agreement after the board alleged that he administered medications to horses without establishing a medical need for the treatments, among other violations, according to the agreement.

Hong Kong Harry has been disqualified from his second-place finish in the Grade 1 Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on May 6 due to a positive test for mofebutazone, a mild painkiller.

Phil D’Amato, Hong Kong Harry’s trainer, was fined $1,000 for the positive test but did not receive a suspension. Mofebutazone is used to treat joint and muscle pain, though it is not approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration. It is a Class 4 drug under classifications issued by the Association of Racing Commissioners International.

Restrainedvengence, eight-time stakes winner, retires after 43 starts

DEL MAR, Calif. - Restrainedvengence, an 8-year-old gelding who won eight stakes at tracks in California and New Mexico, has run his last race.

On Sunday, Restrainedvengence finished fifth of seven in an allowance race at a mile at Del Mar in which he was eligible to be claimed for $80,000. The loss was his ninth consecutive defeat since a win in the Downs at Albuquerque Handicap in New Mexico in September 2021.

“That’s his last race,” trainer Val Brinkerhoff said shortly Restrainedvengence was unsaddled on the track.

“He doesn’t have it anymore.”

Next Arabian Knight-Geaux Rocket Ride showdown could come in BC Classic

DEL MAR, Calif. - There is a significant chance the next meeting in the budding rivalry between the brilliant 3-year-olds Arabian Knight and Geaux Rocket Ride will be the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.

A 1-2 finish in Saturday’s Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar leaves both runners at the fore of the BC Classic discussion. The BC Classic at 1 1/4 miles may be their next starts, according to Bob Baffert, who trains Arabian Knight, and Richard Mandella, who trains Geaux Rocket Ride.
