Arzak wins the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes last Saturday with a 101 Beyer Speed Figure.

Key developments are taking place at Keeneland as the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint picture comes into focus. Two major candidates emerged from a prep race on opening weekend of the front-loaded fall meet, while the reigning Turf Sprint winner and another Breeders’ Cup heroine are preparing for a matchup this coming weekend.

Arzak debuts on Daily Racing Form’s list of Turf Sprint contenders this week after rolling to a two-length victory in the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes last Saturday, earning a 101 Beyer Speed Figure.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Local contenders tightly matched

Benoit Photo
The Chosen Vron will come into the Breeders' Cup Sprint off a 14-week layoff.

While defending champion Elite Power and the sensational filly Echo Zulu, if she goes, are the clear-cut leaders of the Eastern delegation to this year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint, there is little to choose among the well-matched West Coast contingent that features The Chosen Vron, Anarchist, and Dr. Schivel. That trio finished heads apart, in that order, when they last met in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby this summer at Del Mar.

Didia's triumph in Rodeo Drive could serve as tune-up for BC Filly and Mare Turf

Barbara D. Livingston
Didia earned a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 with the Rodeo Drive win.

ARCADIA, Calif. - In the first stage of her career, Didia was a two-time Group 1 winner in Argentina in 2021.

More recently, she has developed an admirably consistent record in the United States, winning five of six starts, including the Grade 2 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Didia’s life could have widespread changes in the first week of November. With the win in the $301,500 Rodeo Drive Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf, Didia earned a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.

Practical Move targets Breeders' Cup Classic or Dirt Mile

Barbara D. Livingston
Practical Move ended a six-month layoff with an allowance-race victory at Santa Anita on Friday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Practical Move, who returned from a six-month layoff since a win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in April to record his fourth consecutive victory in an allowance race on Friday, will be pre-entered later this month for the Breeders’ Cup Classic and Dirt Mile to be run at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.

The $6 million BC Classic is run at 1 1/4 miles, which would be a new distance for Practical Move. The Dirt Mile has a purse of $1 million.

Solid week yields solid Breeders' Cup team for Chad Brown

Barbara D. Livingston
McKulick's victory in the Waya Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday makes her a contender for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - A successful week likely produced a bushel of Breeders’ Cup contenders for trainer Chad Brown.

A 1-2 finish by Gina Romantica and In Italian in the Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland combined with McKulick’s solid victory in Saturday’s Grade 3 Waya Stakes at Aqueduct could give Brown at least three runners in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.

The 3-year-old filly Randomized won Sunday’s Grade 2 Beldame at Aqueduct which likely earned her a spot alongside her 5-year-old stablemate Search Results in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Muth makes his expensive purchase price look good in American Pharoah Stakes

Muth earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 91 in winning the American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Muth won his first stakes in his third start in Saturday’s Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita, but it was not the first time the colt has been at the center of this year’s cast of juveniles.

Back in March, Muth was purchased by Zedan Racing for $2 million, the most expensive hip of the prominent Ocala Breeders’ March Sale of 2-year-olds in-training in Florida.

Hoist the Gold won the Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland on Friday to gain a berth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Dream Team One Racing Stable paid $50,000 this summer to make Hoist the Gold Breeders’ Cup eligible.

Trainer Dallas Stewart took the 4-year-old to Del Mar for the Bing Crosby Stakes specifically to try and qualify for the BC Sprint, but Hoist the Gold ran below form in that race, finishing eighth, and was little better when sixth in the Pat O’Brien Stakes.

Back in Kentucky, Hoist the Gold had one more chance to win a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race, and got the job done Friday with a career-best performance in winning the Phoenix Stakes.

V V's Dream won the Pocahontas at Churchill Downs in September.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kenny McPeek did not catch a case of Breeders’ Cup fever with the 2-year-old stakes horses he ran Friday and Saturday at Keeneland.

V V’s Dream ran the best of them, finishing a good second on Friday in the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes, and even she is no sure thing for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

“We’re undecided right now. We’ll take a look at things over the next couple weeks and see where we’re at,” McPeek said Sunday.

Dr. Schivel wins SA Sprint Championship Oct 2 2021

Owner Dean Reeves is on target to run Albany and Cheveley Park stakes winner Porta Fortuna in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and Dr. Schivel (above) in the Sprint.

From his vantage point on a yacht off the coast of the small Caribbean country of Turks and Caicos, everything looked good for American horse owner Dean Reeves last Saturday, particularly the races on a computer screen.

From Newmarket Racecourse in Britain to Santa Anita in Southern California, horses Reeves co-owns won important stakes in prep races for the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita on Nov. 3 and 4.

“We started the morning with a Group 1 and finished the day with a Grade 2 for the doctor,” Reeves said earlier this week.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf: Pilgrim win makes Agate Road serious contender

Susie Raisher/NYRA
Agate Road captured Wednesday's Grade 2 Pilgrim at Aqueduct, propelling him to the top of the list for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

A rare Wednesday graded stakes race in New York added at least a hint of clarity to the North American murk that is the 2-year-old male turf division. As of early Wednesday afternoon, a grand total of one male 2-year-old on the continent had so much as cracked 80 on the Beyer Speed Figure scale in a turf race at six furlongs or longer.
