Fierceness, the winner of the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and likely champion 2-year-old colt for 2023, closed at 8-1 to lead all individual interests in the third Kentucky Derby future bet, well behind the overall favorite, the “all others” entry, at $6.88 for every $2 win wager.

National Treasure gets post 7, favored for Pegasus World Cup Invitational

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - National Treasure drew post 7 and was established as the 9-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational. The event will highlight a 13-race program at Gulfstream Park that also includes the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational and $500,000 Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf Invitational.

Maymun latest star shooting out of Baffert's stable

ARCADIA, Calif. - Maymun, the easy winner of a maiden race at Santa Anita on Saturday, is the latest prospect on a growing list of dynamic 3-year-olds trained by Bob Baffert.

Maymun won his debut on Saturday in an exciting manner in a maiden race for 3-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Maymun took the lead shortly after the start and set quick fractions of 21.72 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 43.91 for the half-mile, leading by at least a length. Maymun extended his advantage to the stretch, winning by 7 1/2 lengths as the 4-5 favorite.

Track Phantom earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure for the victory in the Lecomte Stakes.

Track Phantom came out of his Saturday win in the Lecomte Stakes looking fresh, healthy, and happy Sunday morning. His next stop: The Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 17, when a new challenger will be coming out of Track Phantom’s barn at Fair Grounds.  

Track Phantom won the Grade 3, $200,000 Lecomte by 2 3/4 lengths, running his two-turn record to three wins from three starts, adding the Lecomte to his Dec. 23 victory in the Gun Runner at Fair Grounds, and bumping his Kentucky Derby qualifying points total to 30, already likely enough to make the 20-horse Derby field.

Forever Souper catches Souper Blessing in Sunshine Turf

Forever Souper returned $11.60 in winning the Sunshine Turf at Gulfstream Park on Sunday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Sunday’s $75,000 Sunshine Turf at Gulfstream Park turned out to be a “Souper” race for trainer Michael Trombetta.

Trombetta sent out the first two finishers in the restricted stakes for Florida-breds on the grass, Forever Souper running down stablemate Souper Blessing to register a one-length victory while making his stakes debut in the race.

Newgrange to skip Pegasus, targets Saudi Cup or Dubai World Cup

ARCADIA, Calif. - Newgrange, winner of the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 26, has been held out of Saturday’s Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in favor of the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita the same day.

The decision was based on a plan to send Newgrange to Saudi Arabia or Dubai in coming months, if the four-time stakes winner performs well on Saturday.

Aqueduct's Sunday program canceled due to cold temperatures

Aqueduct canceled its second consecutive program on Sunday due to weather conditions.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Live racing at Aqueduct was canceled for a second consecutive card Sunday due to continued cold conditions in the New York Metropolitan area. 

Temperatures Sunday morning were in the low 20s with windchills around 11 degrees. Conditions were expected to improve throughout the day. Unlike Saturday's card, which was canceled on Friday,  the decision to cancel Sunday was announced around 10 a.m., roughly 2 1/2 hours before first post.

Laurel Park cancels Sunday program due to track conditions following Friday snow

Laurel Park on Sunday canceled its third straight program due to wintry weather.

Laurel Park on Sunday canceled its racing card, the third consecutive program abandoned due to extreme weather conditions.

Roughly four inches of snow fell in the region beginning early Friday morning, and that afternoon’s program was terminated as was Saturday’s stakes-laden card.

Concerns that moisture from the Friday snowstorm would impact the racing surface forced Sunday’s cancellation, according to a release from the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association.

Los Alamitos cancels Saturday card following heavy rain

Los Alamitos has cancelled a nine-race program for Saturday evening following steady rain that fell Saturday morning and was expected to continue through the day.

The decision was made shortly after noon.

“There is still some rain in the forecast,” track spokesman Orlando Gutierrez said. “We’ve had a nice steady rain.”

Racing is scheduled for Sunday with a nine-race program to begin at 5 p.m. Pacific. The Sunday program will include a carryover of $29,854 in the $2 pick six from Jan. 14.

Chilly temperatures force cancellation of Saturday cards at Aqueduct, Laurel

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Live racing at Aqueduct Saturday – as well as morning training at Belmont Park – has been canceled due to a forecast that calls for wind-chills in the single-digits, the New York Racing Association announced Friday afternoon.

After light snow fell throughout most of Friday’s card, during which all scheduled eight races were run, temperatures were forecasted to plummet overnight and the high for Saturday was expected to reach only 24 degrees, but with wind-chills in the 5-to-10-degree range, according to the National Weather Service.
