One in Vermillion won the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial at Saratoga in his final start.

One in Vermillion, winner of five stakes in four states including the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial at Saratoga last August in his final start, was euthanized Friday because of the effects of laminitis, according to owner Jonathan Kalman.

One in Vermillion, who was 4, sustained a fetlock injury in a workout at Zia Park in November that led to his retirement. In late December, One in Vermillion was being prepared for a trip to Kentucky for the Keeneland January sale when a horseshoer noticed that the colt was suffering from founder in his opposite foreleg.

Bob Baffert Oct 27 2023
Barbara D. Livingston
With Baffert blocked from running horses in the Kentucky Derby, his owners in past years have transferred their runners to other trainers. That will not be the case this season.

Owners who have 3-year-olds with trainer Bob Baffert that were nominated to the Triple Crown did not move those horses to other barns by Monday, meaning they will not be eligible to run in the Kentucky Derby on May 4.

Baffert is still under suspension by Churchill Downs Inc. for the post-race positive incurred by Medina Spirit who crossed the finish line first in the 2021 Kentucky Derby, but was disqualified after testing positive for a therapeutic substance that is not permitted to be in a horse’s system on race day.

Trainer Brendan Galvin recently relocated his 20-horse stable from Golden Gate Fields to Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Before Friday’s program, trainer Brendan Galvin had never won a race at Santa Anita and had not had a face-to-face meeting with Richard Meyer, his client who races as Four Quarters Corp.

Dazzle the Command changed all of that with a win in his 13th career start in a maiden race on turf.

“That was the first time I met the owner,” Galvin said on Sunday morning. “It was a good day. It’s good to be here.”
