Ghalia Princess points to Gazelle Stakes as next start

Ghalia Princess is likely to stretch out to 1 1/8 miles with a start in the Gazelle Stakes, trainer Brad Cox said.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Ghalia Princess, the six-length winner of Saturday’s Cicada Stakes, will be given the opportunity to stretch out in distance and will most likely make her next start in the Grade 3, $200,000 Gazelle Stakes going 1 1/8 miles on April 6 at Aqueduct, trainer Brad Cox said Sunday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Recent stakes wins on turf by Medoro and Stay Hot at Santa Anita have left trainer Peter Eurton pondering how to campaign the promising 3-year-olds this spring.

Medoro won the China Doll Stakes at a mile for fillies on March 10 in her first start of the year, remaining unbeaten in three career starts.

The Chosen Vron plans easy schedule before Bing Crosby

ARCADIA, Calif. - The Chosen Vron, winner of the 15th stakes of his career at Santa Anita on Saturday, will not have a busy race schedule in coming months prior to an expected start in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar in the summer.

The Chosen Vron won his Grade 1 debut in the Bing Crosby Stakes last July, a victory trainer Eric Kruljac said remains a personal highlight.

“That’s the milestone moment of my career,” Kruljac said on Sunday. “That, and winning the Test.”

Howard, Pimlico-based trainer, dies at 45

David Howard, 45, a trainer based at Pimlico Race Course, died Friday evening after suffering a heart attack, according to racing officials at the Maryland Jockey Club.

A native of Germantown, Maryland, Howard began his training career in 2021 and saddled his first winner in the second race at Laurel on Feb. 27, 2022, when Hot Choice was placed first via disqualification.

Endlessly tops field of 12 for Saturday's Jeff Ruby Steaks

Endlessly was made the favorite for Saturday's Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park.

A full field of 12, plus two also-eligibles, was entered Saturday evening for Turfway Park’s signature Kentucky Derby prep, the Grade 3, $700,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks on March 23.

The Ruby awards Derby points to its top finishers on a 100-50-25-15-10 scale.

Endlessly, who won the El Camino Real Derby on a synthetic surface in his 3-year-old debut, was made the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the large field. The colt was a multiple graded stakes winner on turf last season for Michael McCarthy.

Improbable, Eclipse Award winner in 2020, euthanized after leg fracture

Improbable won three consecutive Grade 1s in 2020: the Hollywood Gold Cup; the Whitney; and the Awesome Again.

Eclipse Award champion Improbable, whose first foals will race this year, was euthanized Saturday night after a loss of coordination led to a leg fracture. The son of City Zip was 8.

A release from WinStar Farm, where Improbable was standing at stud, said the stallion began displaying ataxia, or a loss of coordination, “behind” on Saturday morning. He was shipped to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., for treatment.

Taxed may target Apple Blossom as next start

Taxed was making her first start since September in a second-level allowance sprint at Oaklawn on Saturday.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Taxed could move back to both graded stakes company and two turns for her next start after a powerful 4-year-old debut Saturday at Oaklawn Park.

The winner of last year’s Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan was making her first start since September in a second-level allowance sprint. She let the speed go and closed like a freight train under jockey Cristian Torres. Taxed won by 3 1/2 lengths while covering six furlongs on a fast track in 1:10.53.

“She ran to the way she’s been training,” trainer Randy Morse said.

Track Phantom draws post 12 in field of 12 for Louisiana Derby

Track Phantom got a 90 Beyer Speed Figure for winning the Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds on Jan. 20.

A dozen 3-year-olds, headed, nominally, by Track Phantom, one of seven horses trained by Steve Asmussen, Todd Pletcher, and Kenny McPeek, were entered Saturday in the $1 million Louisiana Derby, the featured race at Fair Grounds on March 23, the most important card in a long meeting that ends the next day.

Mike Prunetti, longtime NYRA employee, dies at 77

Mike Prunetti worked at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky and for The Jockey Club and had served four years in the Air Force before joining NYRA in 1971.

Mike Prunetti, who worked in many capacities as an official at the New York Racing Association over four decades, died Friday due to the effects of pulmonary fibrosis, according to former NYRA racing secretary Bruce Lombardi.

Prunetti, a resident of Boca Raton, Fla., was 77.

Uncle Heavy begins prep for Wood Memorial

Uncle Heavy was part of a quarantine at Belmont Park due to a case of equine herpesvirus.

Uncle Heavy, the Grade 3 Withers Stakes winner at Aqueduct on Feb. 3, had his first work since that race on Saturday, breezing five furlongs in 1:02.09 at Parx as he prepares for a start in the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 6.
