Six fillies entered in the Moyglare Stud Stakes on Sunday at The Curragh in Ireland share a common trait: All have been beaten by Maybe, the undefeated race favorite.
DEL MAR, Calif. – Bourbon Bay may ruin trainer A.C. Avila’s weekend.
A four-time graded stakes winner on turf, Bourbon Bay was entered for Sunday’s $1 million Pacific Classic on Wednesday and then entered on Thursday for Sunday’s $200,000 Del Mar Handicap over 1 3/8 miles on turf. Since horses are allowed an entry in only one race on the same day, trainer Neil Drysdale chose the Del Mar Handicap for Bourbon Bay.
DEL MAR, Calif. – It was 20 years ago this summer that Del Mar put on its first $1 million race, the Pacific Classic, an event, next to opening day, that has become the biggest day of the season here. Marty Jones remembers that race well. Just 19 at the time, Jones had a ringside seat as Best Pal, trained by his father, Gary, came storming down the stretch to win it.
“That place was just crazy that day,” Jones remembered the other day. “It was the old grandstand, and it was just packed. It had a Derby-like feel.”

DEL MAR, Calif. - Tanda's victory in the Rancho Bernardo Handicap on Sunday has her new trainer, Mike Mitchell, eyeing the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs.
Tanda was making her first start at this track and for Mitchell, who took over from Dan Hendricks as Tanda's trainer at the end of July after she finished third to Irish Gypsy and Ultra Blend in the A Gleam Handicap at Hollywood Park. Mitchell gave the mount to Joe Talamo, who rode her for the first time.
Margot Did, one of two fillies in a field of 17, pulled a 20-1 upset in Friday’s Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York, England, giving jockey Hayley Turner a career-best second win at the highest level this summer.
Turner won the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket on Dream Ahead last month. At the time, Turner became the first female rider to win a Group 1 in England since Alex Hammond won the Nunthorpe Stakes in a dead heat in 1997.
DEL MAR, Calif. - Raetodandty moved closer to a potential start in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs in November with an upset win in Wednesday’s $105,745 Green Flash Handicap.
Raetodandty ($23) closed from third in the field of eight to win the five-furlong turf race by a neck over Streakin’ Mohican, giving 54-year-old owner-trainer Val Brinkerhoff his first career stakes win. “To win in a place like this makes it special,” the former jockey said.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Breeders’ Cup will award a $500,000 cash prize to one winner in an off-site mystery-mutuel voucher promotion it plans to implement for the second day of its 2011 event this year at Churchill Downs, according to Breeders’ Cup and racing officials.
Immortal Verse and Goldikova, the one-two finishers Monday in the Prix Jacques le Marois, could meet again Sept. 11 in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. Should Goldikova wind up in that race, which trainer Freddie Head said was the plan for the mare, it would deviate from the schedule Goldikova has kept the last two years. In 2009 and 2010, Goldikova was given a rest after the Marois, returning both years to race during early October in the Prix de la Foret.
