Churchill Downs: Turallure will train up to Breeders' Cup Mile

Michael Burns
Turallure finishes strongly to take the Woodbine Mile.

Turallure, suddenly a fringe contender for a divisional Eclipse Award after adding the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile to a 2011 victory resume that already included the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch, will not race again until the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill, trainer Charlie Lopresti said Wednesday.

“We’ll just take it easy with him for a bit, then get him ready at Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup,” said Lopresti. “He really ran huge the other day.”

Woodbine: Breeders' Cup-bound Northern Passion will head to Churchill early

Northern Passion cruises to the finish of the Natalma after jockey Luis Contreras cut the corner turning for home.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – No local horses emerged from last Sunday’s Woodbine Mile program as legitimate contenders for the Breeders’ Cup.

But, Woodbine’s first potential Breeders’ Cup representative stepped up to the plate here last Saturday when Northern Passion captured the Natalma Stakes for trainer Mark Casse.

The Natalma, a one-mile turf race for 2-year-old fillies, not only offered Grade 3 status and a purse of $200,000 but was part of the Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In challenge series and earned Northern Passion a fees-paid berth in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Woodbine Mile runner-up Courageous Cat will target Breeders' Cup Mile

Shigeki Kikkawa
Courageous Cat (right), winning the Shoemaker at Hollywood, is using the Woodbine Mile as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill.

Courageous Cat, sent off at even money for the Woodbine Mile, couldn’t withstand Turallure’s charge but held on to finish second in a wild finish.

“It looked like a pretty good race,” said trainer Bill Mott. “It might have been better if there was a little more pace in front of him. He wound up on the lead for a long time.”

Courageous Cat was on his way back to Saratoga on Monday, along with stablemate Al Khali, and the Breeders’ Cup Mile is still on his agenda.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario—Turallure mounted a powerful rally from out of traffic under a daring ride from Julien Leparoux to capture Sunday’s $1 million Woodbine Mile.

Turallure ($14.90) was angled wide nearing the eighth pole after saving ground most of the way, and he caught favored Courageous Cat in the final strides to win by a neck. Turallure covered the distance over firm ground in 1:34.92.

Belmont: Uncle Mo, Stay Thirsty both gearing up for Breeders' Cup Classic

Barbara D. Livingston
Uncle Mo, shown exercising on Sept. 11, will use the one-mile Kelso as a stepping-stone to the Breeders' Cup Classic.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Though they will take different paths to get there, the ultimate goal is to have Uncle Mo and Stay Thirsty end up in the same starting gate for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs.

Those sentiments were expressed Sunday by owner Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher after they watched both 3-year-olds put in workouts over Belmont Park’s main track on a gorgeous fall-like morning. Both horses worked by themselves.

Woodbine: Finale gives Pletcher a repeat in Summer Stakes

Michael Burns
Finale (left), under John Velazquez, wins the Grade 3 Summer Stakes at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Finale punched his ticket to the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs with a workmanlike score Saturday at Woodbine in the $254,000 Summer Stakes, a one-mile BC Win and You’re In event.

Finale ($3.70) pressed a slow pace on the outside under John Velazquez and then duked it out with the front-running Excaper in the stretch en route to three-quarter-length triumph over that one. Daddy Nose Best rallied strongly to nail Maritimer on the wire for third in the eight-horse field.

Acclamation likely to opt for Canadian International over Breeders' Cup

Benoit & Associates
Acclamation earned an automatic berth in the BC Classic but will more likely target the BC Turf.

POMONA, Calif. – California-bred and -based Acclamation will take his show on the road. Winner of three consecutive Grade 1’s and currently the top male in California, Acclamation may skip the fall meet at Santa Anita and run for a $1.5 million purse Oct. 16 at Woodbine in the Grade 1 Canadian International. In all likelihood, that would preclude running in the Breeders’ Cup.
