Belmont: McGaughey shoots for sixth Frizette victory

Though Saturday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Frizette Stakes is viewed as a showdown between My Miss Aurelia and Stopshoppingmaria, it’s never a good idea to dismiss trainer Shug McGaughey in this race.

McGaughey has won the Frizette five times and goes for his sixth when he sends out Spare Change in the one-mile race. The Frizette is a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Spare Change, a daughter of Bernardini, won a seven-furlong maiden race by eight lengths in front-running fashion in her second start. That race, as did her debut, came in the slop.

Belmont: Ice tries to revive 2009 magic with No Spin in Champagne

ELMONT, N.Y. – On a breezy fall Wednesday morning, trainer Tim Ice stood on a wooden platform just above and to the left of the Belmont Park winner’s circle. It’s a place he has been before.

“It feels like forever,’’ Ice said.

In reality, it’s only been 2 1/2 years since Ice hoisted the trophy following Summer Bird’s victory in the Belmont Stakes. For good measure, Summer Bird came back to Belmont that fall and won the Jockey Club Gold Cup en route to winning an Eclipse Award as the 3-year-old champion.

Santa Anita: Baffert still weighing Cup start for Coil

Barbara D. Livingston
Coil is still being considered for the Breeders' Cup Dirt mile.

ARCADIA, Calif.-There may be a race at the Breeders’ Cup for Haskell Invitational winner Coil after all.

Last weekend, trainer Bob Baffert said Coil would not start in the BC Classic over 1 1/4 miles at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5 after a third-place finish to stablemate Game On Dude and Awesome Gem in the $250,000 Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita.

Baffert reiterated that position on Wednesday, but said that the $1 million BC Dirt Mile around one turn on the same day is a possibility. He stopped well short of committing the promising 3-year-old.

Breeders' Cup Challenge rewards Giant Ryan twice

Tom Keyser
Giant Ryan, with Cornelio Velasquez aboard, wins the Vosburgh.

Only three horses have won multiple Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win and You’re In races this year. Two of the three, Tizway and the recently retired Cape Blanco, are among the most recognizable names in the business. The third is Giant Ryan, a Calder-based, New York-bred speedster whose relative anonymity on the national scene is exceeded only by that of his trainer, Bisnath Parboo.

Breeders' Cup: Shared Account training up to Filly and Mare Turf

Barbara D. Livingston
Shared Account is looking to win the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf for a second consecutive year.

Trainer Graham Motion is taking an unconventional approach to prepare defending champion Shared Account and the stakes-placed Aruna for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4.

While leading American contenders such as Stacelita and Dubawi Heights are set for the Filly and Mare Turf after major stakes wins last weekend, Shared Account will be trained up to the race. Earlier this year, she was fourth in the Gallorette Handicap at Pimlico in May and was sixth in the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes at Woodbine on Sept. 18.

The closer Gio Ponti gets to the World Cup, the brighter he has become, according to his trainer, Christophe Clement.

Gio Ponti, winner of the Shadwell last year, was assigned post 5 in a field of eight in the Shadwell, a Win and You’re In race toward the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Ramon Dominguez will ride 6-year-old Gio Ponti for owner Castleton Lyons and trainer Christophe Clement.

Breeders' Cup: Grace Hall, Weemissfrankie in no hurry to ship for Juvenile Fillies

Shigeki Kikkawa
Weemissfrankie, winner of the Oak Leaf Stakes, will train at Santa Anita for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Unbeaten fillies Grace Hall and Weemissfrankie punched tickets to the Juvenile Fillies, but neither will travel to Churchill Downs any time soon.

“We’ll stay right here at Delaware Park until the last minute,” trainer Anthony Dutrow said after Grace Hall won the $75,000 Blue Hen Stakes on Oct. 1 at Delaware. Grace Hall earned a 78 Beyer Speed Figure winning the 1 1/16-mile arace by 5 3/4 lengths.

Breeders' Cup: Bridgetown to miss Turf Sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Bridgetown "is not quite right" and will not start in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, trainer Todd Pletcher said.

Bridgetown, who has won three of four U.S. starts this year for Todd Pletcher, most notably a runaway score in the Troy Stakes at Saratoga that made him one of the early favorites for the Turf Sprint, will not make the race.

Bridgetown, fourth in the Turf Sprint at 3, had posted three triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures during his 4-year-old campaign. The Speightstown homebred was sent to owner Eugene Melnyk’s farm in Ocala for some clinical work, and MRI results indicated he was “not quite right.”
